WTB - Beginner bike

I have 2 friends that are getting into mountain biking and are in desperate need up upgrading their ancient department store bikes, so im helping them search and trying to keep them from getting ripped off on craigslist.

The biggest issue is they have a small budget. $200 for a bike I know thats not a ton to work with, but I feel like there should be a few mid-2000's 26er hardtails out there collecting dust somewhere.

they are both in the 5'8" range..so probably looking at a medium. if you have something or know of something that would be a good starter bike but not junk, let me know.

I talked to my friends yesterday and convinced them that they should up their budget to about $400/bike if they want to find something decent. so if anyone knows of anything, id appreciate a shout. thanks!
