Where to Ride After Snow

Well, if you really got to get out. I live in lincroft, you could take your cross bike to the atlantic highlands, there are alot of hills to go on in that area, the snow is cleared and no or very littlle car traffic to speak of, alot of steep hills. I would be there right now if I did not have this shitty head cold and my cross bike was not at Halters being fixed!

Next weekend for sure!

BOBKE

I drove through that area earlier in the week, and wasn't comfortable with the amount of room on the shoulders. How is it when you saw it?

Over the weekend I drove through with my son, we drove by the old hofbrow house on top of the hill. There are alot of side streets down the hill in that area that looked ridable on a cross bike or mtb bike, Ive rode in there before when the trails orer still snow covered. I would park at the top lot of Hartshorn and ride my bike down past Henry Hudson High school and cross over rt. 36 and down in that area. Or.... where the tan church is, in fact there are good climbs around the corner from that church as well. Should keep you busy for a hour or so, might not get far but it really is a good hill work out.
Or join us at the hook next weekend.

This weekend is looking promising. The snow is finally packed down and the overnight temp on friday night is supposed to be low 20s. So we could be in for some crunchy grippy snow that doesn't cave underneath your tire IF you hit the trail early on saturday morning. Once the sun softens the snow up around mid morning, things will return to suckage. Keep your fingers crossed.

Local trails were very ridable where things were packed down by hikers - no studs needed. Less used trails were like navigating through a minefield. Non-trails were almost there, but not quite. I could walk on top of about 50% of the snow, but sink in about 5 feet later if I could somehow get started going at all.

Spot on! I did a test ride in my backyard yesterday (virgin snow with rain/ice pack on top), and it held my 200lbs + my bike just fine. Tires gripped well, but I think studs would be a good idea.

Well, though my yard was perfect (as reported above), not 1/2 mile away the same was not true. I went for a short ride this AM at Loantaka park. Packed/trodden sections were fine (albeit choppy). Fresh snow sections, though, couldn't hold my weight. Ice layer was not thick enough. It was plenty early (6:15AM) and plenty cold (18 degrees), so that wasn't the issue....I think we're going to find some places will be golden, and others will be trails from the land of Suck.

Well that sure make it difficult commit to driving out to a remote trailhead. Maybe open field areas hold the crust better than wooded areas. I saw a report of someone riding on big open fields the other day a bit north of me in NY.

I hit the Sourlands early this morning. Conditions were pretty darn good, especially if you stick to the main trails that get lots of hiker traffic. The big clockwise outer loop had a few hike-a-bike sections where the snow didn't get compacted yet. You couldn't venture off the trail without sinking and losing momentum, so just stay on the trail and you'll be fine. Boulderama was perfectly compacted. It was pretty cool just flying through the boulder fields floating above them on a carpet of hardpacked snow.

I think I'm going again tomorrow early. Last chance before the big thaw.

Thank you again SNOWMOBILES!!!!, Ran into 2 of them today. One almost smacked a tree by the airfield as he tried to show off in front of me.

Great ride today...stick to the fireroads and you wont need studs 95% of the time.

nice 16 mi with some rinse n repeat in different direction...Icebiker had extra 2mi, cuz he can't sleep and just had to get there before everybody else :p

Lakes/Ponds rideable...Sheperd lake 15" last Saturday, 18" today....I hope Ice Fishermen don't exaggerate about the thickness of the ice the same way they exaggerate about the size/weight of their fish  Studs required for the lake/pond.

Oh and I forgot.....don't even think about trying to go off the fire roads....crust still to thin...you sink right in.

What time? Would love the extra motivation of knowing someone else is out there.

He's planning 7.30am before the thaw.
I love the new bike btw. Nice to see someone post a non-race bike. Good luck with it.
