Iron Hill MASS race for me on Sunday. 4hr Endurance in the heat. Pre-rode the course last night. If you've been there before, the course is very different. New directions, new trails and close to 7mi per lap.

Tell me about the course. Easier? Harder? I think we may go down and do this one.

curious how this is run, 30mins + 2 laps?

they mysteriously decide (using the first bunch of lap times) when they want the race to end (around 35 minutes) and start putting up lap cards with 5 to go.
i did cat 5 a couple times, avg speed was 24.5mph. could have been faster, without much more work, but it is mostly individuals in cat 5, and we were not
organized.

pretty good sustained speed, you'll soon make the 55+ group :D
good luck on Sunday

I wouldn't say it's any easier or harder. It's a small park and you're either going up or down. I've been racing there since 2008 and this seems like it flows the best. Another plus is it's very dry, which in the past has not been the case. Decent amount of roots and rocks to keep you on your game.

The new trail was only part of Cat1 last year, so it will look new to Cat2/3 and endurance. Should be challenging to some Cat2 and 3 racers, but nothing over the top. A couple of uphill log overs will get old lap after lap.

Here's the ride from last night: https://www.strava.com/activities/649166196

Stop in and say hi at the Hangsterfer's Racing tent if you make the trip.

Iron Hill was my first MTB race ever...1994, then again in 1995 iirc....I thought the "Mega Dip" was the craziest thing ever. Then again I raced with toe clips and my old track shoes that had a hard sole that was used to screw spikes into for sprinting(removed for riding, of course).

Mega dip is not part of the race this year, just ride by on both sides. It's definitely fun, but I understand why the promoter doesn't include it. I recall something about it being the longest running race in the MASS series, pre-MASS actually.

Said bike with narrow bars and only tires for sus pension and cue the neon jersey for the shop I was racing for. And these weird red pants that I won at a road race in Connecticut ...good memories at that place!!

Have fun at IH all!!
