Tree cutting to take place on Weldon Brook through March 31, 2017
A habitat improvement project totaling 12 acres will take place on Weldon Brook WMA from now until March 31, 2017. This management is part of a forest stewardship plan approved by the New Jersey DEP Forest Service. Two different treatments will be done: 1) Cut most of the overstory on 5.1 acres to allow for oak regeneration and early successional forest (green), and 2) Cut select overstory trees on 6.6 acres to thin the overcrowded canopy (blue). The work is done in winter to minimize disturbance to nesting birds, bats, reptiles and amphibians and will conclude by April 1. Hunters and other recreational users are advised to use caution in areas while work is being conducted. For additional information contact sharon.petzinger@dep.nj.gov or by phone at 908-638-5102.
