Has anyone successfully gotten a mountain bike into non-oversized for an airplane? Full suspension looks like maybe you can take the rear triangle off and get it to fit, MAYBE. Obviously with fork/handlebars off too.
hmmmmm

It would be really tough these days with airline carriers respecifying what is OS and what now. Most airline carrier website will list specifics like continental.
http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/sports.aspx

But it can be done if you get a frame coupler which allow you to fit bike in any large suitcase and not get charged the bike luggage fee and just the regular extra bag fee.

well what i'm saying is with a full suspension bike, you can pretty much do that.
look if i took those 2 bolts out on my epic and took off the rear triangle how small it would be

You might look into sending your bike to your destination by UPS or FedEx. This might be cheaper then the airline fees, especially if you have access to a corporate account.

I just went and measured my rockhopper since my epic is still broken.
the overall length is good 23" (verified on specialized website for the epic)
the fork is the longest part, 26" but i can put that sideways in the case easy.
wheels are 26" including the tires.

wow, this might be doable.
I'll have to find or build a 26x26x10 box

save myself a few hundred bucks on my vegas trip over christmas break vs renting a bike :D

I can't wait to get in trouble for wheeling a mountain bike across the casino floor into the hotel room :D

this is what I'm talking about. If he had the right sized case he could get the wheels in there too

I'm trying for the life of me to find a soft case about 26x26x10 but can't. every case I find is like $300

Unfortunately UPS and Fedex have minimum weight calculations that they extend to over size boxes like bikes. I had to ship my blur frame to California for repair and it cost me the equal of sending a 60lb box despite it only weighing about 9lb packed. This was due to the box being over size much like the airlines dimension measurements. I have since considered that pulling the frame apart on a FS bike, if not too difficult, would be the way to pack it small enough to fit in a regular box so you only pay standard weight.

The biggest drawback to UPS is you only want to pay ground rates, so you need to pack the bike early enough to ship out and then it takes just as long to get it back. Perhaps not an issue if you aren't riding much but def an issue if you are a high frequency rider.

I usually just rent from an LBS. Gives you the chance to ride something new not worry about assembly in a hotel room or possible air freight damage. Of course this is only cost effective for short trips.
