If you've ever thought it might be nice to ride your bike down the old
Boonton train line, you might want to join a grassroots effort to turn
the abandoned commuter tracks over to cyclists and pedestrians. Three
groups -- Bike Montclair, the East Coast Greenway Committee and the
Rails to Trails Conservatory -- are supporting the idea and they have
their first meeting tonight, at 7:30 pm, at the Katz Civic Center, 650
Pleasant Valley Way, in West Orange.

"This is the start," said Richard Webster, legal director, Eastern
Environmental Law Center, who acknowledges that the conversion won't
necessary be easy. "At the start of an attempt to do anything, people
will say it can't be done."

Webster says the National Parks Service gives out technical assistance
grants for such efforts, and that an application deadline for the grants
is Aug. 1.

A friend who lives near the Bensen Street station says that occasional
freight trains still run down the tracks, which are owned by Norfolk
Southern.
