The (unofficial) Tour de Fat

@jackx Was correct as I swung back in the thread. @walter Did confirm it was in fact his ?

So no ride today or in fact the next few days as i am working nights out in Long Island at North Shore Hospital. Seems they like me out there as i get keep getting these jobs. As much of a pain in the ass to travel to makes up for the travel home. I would probably visit Long Island more if it was like my commute home. Yesterdays ride was probably not the smartest thing to do before going into this job. I was climbing all over pipes and trying squeeze my ass through to build and sheetrock a fire box soffit. Had kid Jason with me for moral support, ok he held a few things ? i walked away from this one around 2am broken. My back was just Jack. Still have a twinge this morning and hopefully the Aleves will kick in. So I am just going to chill until I have to head in again later this afternoon.

Been working from seven
To eleven every night
Really makes life a drag
I don't think that's right ✌
Is that red paint some type of rust protection ? I love how only the part of the pipes visible from below are painted!

Thanks for confirming the I was not hallucinating. Everytime I pass that bike, I remember it is Walter's bike.

At least you don't keep getting jobs in Maine. ✌
I liked Maine and wood go back if they asked me...

Just when i posted me and ripmo are having a mind meld north goes and fucks that all up. Please tell me there is a learning curve with these long wheelbase bikes. Everytime it points up slightly with a whole lot of babyheads I seem to get hung up. Again slow tech, I can ride the fatbike through a volcano with zero issue but this big bad beasts stem and my nuts have met one too many times. I can say it's not the suspension its definitely the long wheelbase. Is there anyone else having trouble with new Geo. Maybe its 29er, maybe 27.5 has a bit shorter wheelbase.
This past fall, I went from my Seven SS 29er to a Pivot Trail 429 29er, after 12 seasons on the Seven as my only mtb. It's been a pretty remarkable experience, for a bunch of reasons.

Geometry-wise, it was basically going from last century to the 21st century. My Seven was made-to-measure geo, based off of the old model for a XC race machine. 71.5 degree head angle, 72 degree seat angle, short chainstays, built around a 460mm axle-to-crown fork. Set up rigid (I never put a suspension fork on it), the bike is super-quick, but requires constant attention and tons of body english. As I always said, it goes right where it's pointed, whether I mean it or not. The line between "responsive" and "nervous" can get blurry pretty quickly.

When I decided to buy a 21st century FS, and began demo-ing bikes, I couldn't believe how much longer than my Seven these things were, not too mention how raked out the front ends looked when I got on them. And at first, they felt weird. Pretty quickly, though, I forgot about the physical differences in the bikes and adjusted to what the bike wanted me to do, and I was pretty surprised at how nimble this big, long barge actually can be.

I think these new breed bikes work a lot better when the rider stays centered, in ways that the old 71/73 geometry won't allow. When I keep my weight in the "sweet spot" on the 429, it just puts the power down and lets me concentrate on navigation. I rode some super-tight rocky tech in Missouri last month, and kept thinking about how similar it was to Allamuchy North and the bigger stuff at Ringwood, and how much confidence the bike gave me. But I've definitely had to put in time to re-wire how I position myself on the bike relative to the terrain. I'm still learning on every ride, 9 months in.

So that might be a bit long, but I wrote it out to show how my experience compares pretty closely to what you might be dealing with, going back and forth between your Misfit and your Ibis. The geometry differences are probably very similar. I imagine you'll find your "sweet spot" with time.

A lot of good advise @ChrisG I never threw a leg over medium legged like the 429, all my demos were 150mm bikes because well IDK. I think going from a full 200mm DH bike at the parks, i didn't want to settle down that much. @jdog was offering me a really sweet deal on the switchblade but again it was 130mm. It also was a 2019 and they updated the suspension on the 2020s. Mattys OCD couldn't justify plus timing was not right. I did buy the ripmo without a demo as I knew with timing, covid and host of other reasons wasn't in the cards. I have owned plenty of Cruzs over my time and I never owned a DW link. I really wanted to buy into the hype and I am glad I did. Actually ripmo and i are getting along much better these days. Someday you got to chalk it up to not being a good ride day, we all have those. Ripmo as i said before is rock solid when pointed down. Climbs extremely well, I am going to practice what you preach since we are brothers from another mother.

Its was nice to get back on the horse again today after a 3 day lost of ride time. I have one more lost day come Tuesday and we are back to regular schedule. I punched in 8 even though I felt like crap and it was mid morning 80* temps. Summer can't go away quick enough for me. I definitely benefited from the couple days off as i felt strong on the SS, mind you i only rock a 32x20 but thats where i comfortably want to stay.

And a man, he made a house
And when they lay together

I was hoping to get 2 solid rides in with Patty this weekend but she's nursing a knee she hurt hoola hooping, yup thats right. She has dived deep into this new activity and is now on the IR list.

So one of my Btown friends text last night to ride today. Greg and his brother have Steel Company in NYC and has lived their for the past 30 years. They took it over from their Dad and built it bigger today. So if you know any iron workers you know the personality. That family are all stretched out with Greg being the shortest IIRC at 6'3". Big time BB baller, played NYC street ball for many years which if your not familiar is pretty brutal. So Greg's always been in shape. His brothers family lives here in my area also and has boys that are all outstanding BB players for the high school also. Hell Greg's nephew brought little ole Hackettstown high to the state semis until covid blew their shot. The kids senior this year so maybe another shot.

We rolled a pretty steady 13 miles today at Stephens. Got it in before the heat settled in.
Greg was pretty happy with the loop and anxious to get back for some more.

As we were done and chatting, theses guys showed up to my surprise. Sorry Bill looks like I got your better half anyhow 🙂

Hopped-up head and the liquor man said
That you've had enough to drink today
Pulled pork hair and the fifteen bits of flair
Surfing for a place to stay✌

whos been giving you selfie lessons? @pooriggy or @Mitch ???? 🤣

its fine, i dont really photograph that well any way, not hurting the picture cutting half of me out. 😉

When you do daily you sometimes draw a blank. Typically I take mental notes during my ride. Today my head was heavy and repeating thoughts about a tough situation.
These thoughts are not part of the open book I try to be. Life should be easy but like getting on a bike and pedaling, easy. Then there are rocks, big rocks and hills and then big hills. So life can be a lot like your favorite trails and your not so favorite. I purposely took a milder route, just something to hopfully clear the head. It didnt work, i kept wishing the ride would be over because this annoying thinking was consuming my ride.

When I got back to the car and checked my map it said 10 miles at 7.8 Avg. Hot damn 🔥 I still would take a less avg over obsessive thinking as it is damaging for the soul.

When we come to the end of our lives on earth, we will take no material thing with us. We will not take one cent in our cold, dead hands. The only things that we may take are the things we have given away✌

Super hard to write a daily blog when thinking is interfered with a marry-go round of the same thoughts. I'm still turning the pedals daily but to be honest it hasn't been easy. Lack of Sleep and eating has also taken its toll. This is just a bump in the trail of life and one where only time will tell where the next solid section of single track will take you.

I have since installed a 100mm dropper post on my SS. I dont think I will ever own a dirt bike without one, it has to be the greatest invention of the 2000's for the mtb community.

My ride got off this morning pretty well, when you can clean all of the burgers without stopping on a SS, you know you finally have arrived. I have exclusively been riding the misfit for over a week now. This rigid SS bike still gives me the most joy. It has to be a missing chromosome thing to make that statement. My ride turned into 2020 day. On a short steep the only thing that could stop the steed was yet again another bike with another broken chain. Of course it was at the furthest point away from my car but was at the top of Subaru trail. So lots of coasting to get the road. Then the long road walk of shame. Had my pack but no link, no excuse that is something that is a must and to purchase today.

I will bring up a review on my latest trend padded underwear. I have one older Club Ride to compare with a low cost China brand then a med priced China brand and just ordered a pearl Izumi pair. I found freedom i hadn't realized that existed. Because I always assumed bibs were better. So so much better then bibs. I'll post more about this down the trail.

I had a 215lbs. By 8/1 goal that I knew would be a stretch but with recent situations I am actually pretty damn close. Monrnig scale read 218.8 boom! So keeping score thats
5/5 @ 274lb
6/30 @ 219lb
Total loss = 55 fat pounds.

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where?
Who knows where?
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother✌

Top of Subaru - OUCH - Think I might have opted for an Uber and waited out on the hardtop up there.

New Chain for the mood

The Song Remains the Same for my first 4 miles then I opened up to thoughts of what I will share today. Its much more calming when random thoughts stir the pot and not focus on just one. Started in a steady rain and I didn't mind one bit. Actually it was quiet refreshing, except for an exceptional amount of skeets the rain brought along for the ride. Kept a solid pace and had a pretty uneventful ride. Pushed my time as I didn't have a job meet up till 9 15 this morning.

@Soundguy brought up that Blue Mountain Enduro was this weekend and I had thoughts of jumping in a couple of these this year. I gave this some more thought recently and decided to stick with my decision to give up any racing aspirations. You see I made that choice pretty much back 2002 when I stopped DH racing. I find that enduro is close to the same discipline, so unless your on board with not IF but When you will get hurt. When your focus at these types of racing and your pushing it on the edge, just over your comfort level. You have to if your in it to win it otherwise your JRA. So i can keep my cash in pocket and JRA just about anywhere. Stay pinned right at my comfort level. Good luck soundguy and all others partaking this weekend, keep rubberside down!

I had to wake up with the blues
Pulled myself out of bed, yeah
Put on my walkin' shoes
And went up on the mountain
To see what I could see
The whole world was fallin', right down in front of me✌
