The Toughest Road Climbs in NJ

not quite in new jersey

maybe 2 miles into nys ,just south of nyack, comes right off 9w,just a couple hundred feet in elevation but in a very short distance. ouch!(oldmountain rd?)

Harmony Brass Castle Rd. Lopatcong

This is a nice climb that I incorperate into any ride I can squeeze in up north. From where you turn onto H.B.C. road to the top is exactly five miles. I don't know of too many roads in NJ that offer five miles of near steady climbing. There are several false "summits" as you get to the top, and no matter how I pace myself I always seem to be just hanging on by the time I crest the top. If you take any right or left within a few hundred feet of the top you can loop all the way back to the bottom on some wonderfully steep and twisty local roads. Worth checking out if you're in the Easton / Phillipsburg / Lopatcong area.

I grew up out that way, so I'm thinking, what kind of hill could you be talking about? Then I'm thinking, this must be the long way to climb up to the top of Fiddlers. I mean 5 miles is a pretty hefty climb. Not many of them around that area unless you head towards the reservoir.

So I whipped out my slide rule and came up with this:

From Belvidere road to the top of Fiddler's was 4.5 miles, and I remember the road kinda keeps slightly going up after that. This is almost 6 miles, with a total vertical of 750 feet. It's not the Alps but for NJ, it's a pretty extended climb. This would make for a good long hill session if you lived out that way.

That's what i'm guessing you had in mind. Was I close?

You found it.

ok i gave uhlerstown two solid attempts.

starting from the river i got about 3/4 up on each try, ahd to stop right before the steepest part since my heart burst out of my chest =P

2x10...

compact = 2 up front and triple = 3 up front?

i was in my easiest gear though, full on standing with a cadence of like 5 heheh, it gets really steep =] i have heard 30%

compact is 50/34. There are standard and compact triples and doubles.

You certianly have grades in the 20's on there, but 30 is pushing it. You will be better off on the climbs on your way to that area. Longer, but not as steep and still bring on the pain.

hmm so compact specifies the number of teeth on each ring?

this is my goal >

to be able to ride taht =]

monster climbs on rt 12

yes, standard gearing is 53/39, compact is genrally 50/34, however different combinations are out there.

Thats the easy way to frenchtown. 😉. That is just north of where I know, but there are much better climbs off the beaten path. NJ 12 is a snoozer as far as interesting roads go.
