i probably shouldnt post this as it will probably get slamed, but i am a sucker for torture.

i watched the trailer again for the first time in a while. And really this is not a MT. biking video as much as it is a dirt jumping video. What I found amazing about this video is the "behind the scene" action. I find what the guys on the zip lines doing with the camera more interesting then the dirt jumping.

Still shows amazing skills out there on a bike and neat to see. I think caputing CC mt. biking is probably close to impossible. Hard to capture why the pain of climbing and sucking wind is so exilarating to us. :)

I agree, I used to shoot XC helmet cam vids and there's not much you can do, they're bor-ing, except maybe for the guys getting video'ed. Night ride video is kind of interesting tho.

I'm a sucker for mtb and snowboarding vids, so I'll have to check it out. I still watch the NWD and Kranked vids once a year. Speaking of vids, the Meatheads are coming to NJ soon:

If you like backcountry skiing, these guys are the east-coast masters.

Dude.. roam is an awesome video, even if you watch it for cinematography purposes, don't get me wrong the riding is awesome too. I could see if someone is not into FR/DH and not like it that much.

If you get a chance pick up thier first vid. "the Collective" it is just as good as roam, possibly with some more wicked moves. Ryan Leech def. does some more insane stuff in the first one.

I liked it although if you're looking for outrageous riding you won't see it here. You'll see outrageous training, discipline, and some really tough xc races. It captures the personalities of the riders and the experience of training for the olympics.

Seasons looks like it will be another great one.

I think the collective videos really capture when mtb is all about. While they do focus on hucking and roam had some pure dirt jump stuff in there. So of the sections showcase the pure flow and technical ability those guys have. While the pure dirt jump stuff is lame compared to bmx flow, the collective capture just riding trails better than anyone.

The Collective are undoubtedly the best biking filmmakers going. They are the ones to push limits with filming techniques (many of which are replicated by the likes of the Progression or New World Disorder series) while keeping the highest fidelity possible by retaining 18mm film. They are also trying to tell a story as well as showcase the world's best freeride mountain bikers - often the shots are slow-motion or super wide angle to give perpective of the landscape and let the viewer appreciate how beautiful some of these riding locations are. The soundtracks on The Collective and Roam are also the best I've come across, and on a whole new level to use trip hop, folk and underground rap to represent the riding as opposed to the in-your-face metal and punk that every other MTB video I own uses.

As if it needs saying, I am STOKED for Seasons and will be picking it up on its release day. Party at my place anyone?

the equipment arsenal that the collective has must be over 6 figures, they should start doing contract work or something. I love proper cinematographty just as much or more than proper riding.

To be fair, the guys in the Collective cut their teeth filming for the other mtb film producers you mention, before starting their own company and producing their own films. Kranked and NWD helped create and expand the market for mountain bike films- something the Collective has taken advantage of.

Having said that, the Collective definitely take mtb filmmaking up a notch. It's more soulful than NWD with less overt visual trickery than Kranked. Their films are beautiful and strike a great balance between hardcore bike porn, travel documentary, and "soul of the ride" storytelling.

I think the Collective are doing as good a job as one could do in the "bike porn" category. Gripped films are doing in the other direction as good as has been done in the "documentary" style. I watch both types of films most every week. My son is 2 and has seen Roam at least 10 times. We're home today and watched Earthed 5, which is the best in that series since 2 IMO.

There was a still from Seasons in one of the mags that showed Peat, McCaul, Shandro, Berreclothe and others riding Whistler a la the Whistler group scene in Roam. Can't wait to see that crew.
