What a fun thread. Love DIY.
Here’s one I just did with out much planning using material i had laying around. The thought of scratching my brand new anodized rack on the concrete floor was my inspiration. The tool / lock holder happened on a whim.

The annual “solid stain the deck for $60 because I can’t afford to replace it “ pics.

Perfect day to do it on a day off work after an nice 26 mile gravel ride the sun went in and it was comfortable out.

Shelby made sure no one went out on the deck when I was done.

Great job. Is your deck made of 2x4s? I thought mine was the only one. I wonder why. I have to replace some boards and repaint my deck too. I'm not looking forward to it . The last time I did it was about 4 years ago and it nearly killed me. It's a huge deck with "pyramid style" stairs on each side that add so much square footage to sand/paint. The benefit is that there are no rails blocking views.

I think it’s more like 2x6 but literally 2” x6” on top. I’ve flipped over a few boards but that was almost more of a PITA then just replacing it. I randomly check FB marketplace or CL for deck tear downs In case I spot some that fit but usually not. Last summer or the previous I had to replace 2 spots and someone on here had a 2x8 that I ripped down to size.

I bought this house 20 years ago and the deck was “newer” but had never been maintained and was covered in green/black mildew. I did 2 rounds of deck wash to get the grime off but the wood was already not in great shape from years of neglect.

The only thing that holds the deck boards together is 2 coats of deck stain every year for the last 20 years. . I don’t bother sanding anything just not worth the effort.

You’re a smart man for not sanding. I was going to lightly sand the paint on mine. What a disaster. It just kept on peeling. I wound up sanding the whole deck to bare wood. I would have loved to stain it but the wood was in pretty bad shape so i had no choice but to prime and repaint. Now 4-5 yrs later it’s peeling again.

What’s worse is that I tried to sand it with a hardwood floor sander. That didn’t work well so my dad and I sanded the whole deck with a big angle grinder/ sander. The whole project took is over a month. I think I lost over 15 lbs… which worked out great because that’s around the time I rediscovered mountain biking.

I’m always tinkering in the garage and often sit on a shitty step ladder. This weekend I hit a flea market up in the Catskills. Wasn’t expecting to buy anything but then I saw this tractor stool. Grabbed that then picked up a cheap dolly at Harbor Freight, painted it ‘John Deere’ green, bolted on the seat with a small tray….

This project has been years in the making.

Still have a pile of cans to substitute from. Need less at the beginning with white background, and more in the blue/purple/black sections.
If you need a research assistant I work for beer as payment. Just need Uber ride to and from work. 🤪🍺

Nothing too exciting changing the last of the 3 outdoor light fixtures finally. Got this over the winter when the light up front failed and I had to replace it. This has been sitting in the garage in the box since then because it’s for the back deck. Decided spontaneously rather than move the box again today I might get some SAU credit (Spouse Approval Units) for future use. Old fixture is probably 20 years old.

Was pretty easy just the three wires. Thought I could get away with reusing the old mounting plate but I had some issues reattaching the finish screws. Just was about to replace everything but 062254ED-F029-4735-A84A-84DDDB999596.jpegB4BE0B66-C3DC-406A-9A5E-3988770ED2FA.jpeg898B5401-3AA4-41B1-A664-9DE924D99DE4.jpegBC3AC37B-2546-4538-8769-3546C0507210.jpegTurns out the old plate had 2 different thread pitch screws which explained why I couldn’t get the little nut cover to catch.

Used the new screws to thread into the back of the old plate and was able to finally tighten it down.

Installation Also approved by supervisor Shelby.

Are you planning to seal the cans with some sort glass, clear plastic surface? From direct experience it gets a lot less appealing once the dust takes over...
