The DIY thread - DIYourself

Okay, this is DIY, but that Y ain’t me-
It was grandmaster @SmooveP showing off his cabinet steez.
Filling an alcove that used to have a hutch in it with some much needed shelving.

Albums are out of crates and onto proper shelves.
All the shelves are adjustable, so when the vinyl collection outgrows 2 shelves, just pull that middle cd shelf and there’s room for more.
I guess I gotta organize them now. ;-)

If you’re in Sussex Co and need a built in, @SmooveP is your guy.
Thanks, man.
Booze and music deserve a good home.

Me, me, me...I'll go first!

Spark plugs? If not definitely left blinker fuse replacement...also, what happens if you use a Mopar non Hemi specific fender cover? Big boom bada boom?

Yes spark plugs, fortunately theynlast 100k so i wont hsve to do this again anytime soon.

And idk about the fender cover, this one has spent most of its time on the fender of a Hyundai actually 🤣

I have to say that coming from an inline 4 changing the plugs in my v6 equinox was the most complicated spark plugs swap I could imagine...and there always was that one spark in the most complicated spot( the one in the ecu error code, off course) that seemed not to ever torque right.

This is more like BIY (buy it yourself ) but there was a bit of DIY involved.

Short story is a few weeks ago wifey wanted to buy me a new grill for Father’s Day. Guy at work happened to be selling something brand new in box that was MUCH nicer than anything I would get but for 1/2 price off retail. After some negotiating we agreed on a price. Had to rent a U-Haul sprinter van to bring it home good thing middle son is 2x stronger than me. Box was 350 lbs. for reference I am 6’2” standing next to the box on its end. Once I unboxed it realized NFW to carry this up 7 stairs onto my deck.

Middle son and I slowly figured out how to take it apart in the garage and reassemble on the deck. That took 2 hours yesterday but worth it. Christened it and made us burgers last night.

Since this is the first new grill I have bought since my Weber in 2001 I hope it at least lasts at least half that. Time will tell.

i had 4 or 5 of those hard to get to ones, where i had to build the extensions with the socket IN the spark plug hole, 3 on the driver side under the brake booster and 2 on the passenger side (back cylinder of course) where the heater hoses run into the cab.

all i can say is that this cements my love for long life spark plugs, not cheap but ill pay it anyday to do this less frequently. My car (with the same engine) takes ~an hour to do all the plugs just bc the engine sits high enough in the bay that theres nothing really in the way

there was close to a fire when i pulled the old battery. nice red glow and the smell of burning insulation.
put it outside and waited for the fireworks. never happened.

I had to remove a welded coin cell from a [piano] keyboard. It didn't like it, and the battery vented acid under pressure.

An unpleasant experience, though I wasn't hurt.

This thread has been snobbed lately...I decided to try and pump a little new life into my 14 years old desktop while collecting components for the new build. I have so much junk on this old pc it's unthinkable to start with a new OS installation so I am cloning the boot drive on a SSD disk 4 times its size (not defragging it, I swear). I wished I spent the $19.99 for an USB 3.x SATA interface instead of using one of my ancient USB 2.0, it's been 'cloning' for hours...hopefully results in the morning!

last min decision to replace the door between my garage and house. The existing door was a normal indoor door, no weather stripping or threshold and the cold and especially the humidity would just go right through. I guess to make it code they nailed a steel sheet on the garage side.
The only hiccup was I had to cut out the tile so it would sit on the slab since it wouldn’t fit in the RO. Probably better in the end anyways.
Also, managed to not lose it on the way home. Was kinda proud I was able to reuse the trim and nails and not have to repaint the interior wall.

Success. 14.5 years old pc is now running W10 20H2 on 8GB RAM and booting in just a few seconds. Applications open at a decent even if not fast speed and all peripherals are working. Total cost was approx $130 for a 1TB SSD that I can reuse if necessary and a 3.5” to 2.5” frame adapter. Most time consuming was cloning the 500GB HD on the SSD. But it did not need any attention from myself so that was a win.

Not sure I want to shell $1.5k-$2k for a new mid tower anymore...curiously enough that about what I spent 14.5 years ago to build the old computer.

Next project is to finish scraping the roofs (both the garage and the house) and treat them for moss and algae growth, I’m already two weekends down the rabbit hole on that one, a new roof would have been faster...but you can’t beat free labor!

After much dithering on how to do the arms, kayak rack is done.

Could not find a design for wooden arms that didn’t feel/look clunky, just bought some bolt ons.
So glad to get these boats off the ground.
Just need a little more gravel to fill out the bed.

Are nitrile gloves back in stock anywhere for a reasonable price? I found a pre-pandeminc receipt from harbor freight for $9? a box. I haven't looked lately but most places seem to have latex or vinyl which I'm not into. Checking online I'm seeing them for $25+ per box. Been re-using them as much as I can but I've packed a lot of bearings in the last month, so the stash is dwindling.
