TF and Garmin

Question for those who use TF on their Garmin.

Do you have to switch maps on the unit? Is it defaulting to Garmin screen?

I got a 530 early 2024…I assumed since I had the TF installed via Connect IQ that I was showing TF maps. I could usually see trails…but yesterday riding I couldn’t see something on my Garmin but on my phone app it appeared. I wasn’t following a route…just had the map on.

I watched an old tutorial on TF about “unlocking maps”. I never did this/just rolled with the default Garmin.

Am I doing it all wrong?

I have a 1030+ that is a few years old and the TF maps that came on it did not automatically update when there was a new release. The only way I could find to update the TF maps was via Garmin Express with my garmin plugged in to my laptop.

When I first got the 1030+ I think I had to select which map (eg TF or garmin) I wanted to use with each ride profile, it was a while ago, I don't remember the process.

How much cell service did you have? I broke my phone in VT last week and it was showing me maybe...1/3rd of the available trails from TrailForks.

I only noticed it yesterday - I had service on my phone/could see the trails on the app, not on my Garmin itself. I don't normally have maps on when I ride places I know...

I'm very curious, I can't find anything regarding this issue. My sneaking suspicion it's something to do with downloaded regions or something on the TF side not syncing. I think @ebarker9 had a similar issue as well.

Thanks @Cassinonorth - of course it would be easier for me to ask someone in person - hard to put into words...I'm just wondering if it's operator error LOL.

There are two levels of TF integration, one is with the built-in trail fork apps on the Garmin that makes it easier to transfer routes from trail forks into the Garmin. The base maps are a separate thing, and I believe you have to download the TrailForks base map separately. This link gives a little more background. Once you get the map on the device, I think you also have to enable it. If I remember this evening I'll check through my notes because I think I did write my steps down when I set up my 830.

I’ve just gotten to the stage where I assume any trail built in the last 4 years won’t be on my Garmin. It loads the TF map when you integrate it then it never updates it.

The borg claims that the trails update. But they don't.

Ugh, I got all excited thinking I'd click on your link and see a procedure to easily update TF on my watch. Instead I saw directions so complex and 2005ish that I am probably just going to delete the app.

It really has been nice the past few years avoiding things like manually copying files to device root directories as part of the normal process for getting consumer devices to function. On the plus side, at least I don't have to get TF to mail me an updated DVD with the data?

So apparently I didn't take any notes on this. I guess it was easy enough that I decided I would remember how it was done next time lol

I recall installing the TF basemap, I might have been able to do it through Garmin Express. In fact, Express know that I have a basemap update so that was probably it. I'll plug it into the computer again one of these days and report back.

Thanks all. I plan on playing with Garmin this weekend on trails I know/see what happens. Will update

Rode trails today with “other map” option and screen appears same as when I normally just hit start. So I don’t know…
