Summer Sizzler 2024 edition (MASS), Sunday, 6/30

Back again for 2024. One of the longest running races in the MASS series is back again at Rowan College of South Jersey. It will be held on Sunday, June 30th. As we have done over the last several years, we will be donating 100% of race proceeds to NJ NICA. Race course is typical SJ, roots, no rocks, roots, single track with some roots and short punchy climbs. Be prepared to be on the gas the whole time. Did I mention there's some roots?

While nothing is scheduled yet, there will be pre-rides posted later. If you just attended the NICA race there last weekend, some of the course will be included in the Sizzler loop. Current conditions are dry and fully rideable as the gnomes have been hard at work preparing.

Monday bump. Rode the course yesterday and it was real dry. Some storms came thru in the afternoon yesterday, so hopefully no trees have dropped. A little moisture will help. 1 more scheduled pre-ride Wednesday evening at 6pm.

Course is marked and will be the same as last year. There is currently some construction work that interferes with a small portion of the trail. Saturday we will be dealing with those sections.

Info can be found on the Bikereg link and also on the FB event page.

Thanks to any forum members that made it out for the race. Will be a memorable day. As with any weather forecast, 50/50 chance it will be correct. Over night rain early Sunday was correct making the trails a little slick for the Cat1 9am start. The rain, accompanied with the thunder and lightening, that fell during the Cat1 race turned the trails to flowing streams and full slop during the Cat2 and 3 races. That wasn't expected. Breaking down after was at a faster pace as the afternoon heavier rain arrived as predicted.

Wish I was fit enough for Cat 1, but I didn’t envy those folks yesterday! Although, it was pretty fun riding the slop (guilt-free) since it’s typically something I don’t do. Good thing you guys had a hose!

I was one of those Cat1 folks.

It was a pretty amazing event, albeit stressful with the t-storm during cat 1.

Some highlights of the day for me:
  • Working with my friends and Hangsterfers teammates to help put on one of the oldest races in the MASS series.
  • Enlisting @Matt_ kids to make the playlist and podiums better. Such an amazing bunch of kids, even though they punked me into singing happy 13th birthday to G, quite poorly I might add, on the mic during cat 2 staging.
  • Seeing a local student who I've watched become a mountain biker since middle school take the cat 1 SS win over @JDurk - Though I love J, it was really amazing to see this kid from Wildwood who found MTB through NICA stepping into the cat 1 world. Side note - he was running a custom pvc pipe SS spacer setup on his procal that he built himself.
  • The tremendous impact by NICA students. 34% of pre-regs were u19 racers. 40% of pre-reg were known NICA students or coaches. Heatmap showed riders from as far as Virginia and Chicago.
  • Putting the @V-Dub master constructed curb-stepper-upper plywood ramp to good use on the gas line construction railroad ties. Pure hoarder joy! It was bombproof and is back in the trailer ready for another curb rassin' situation.
  • Post-race hang with the crew defying the oncoming storm. The skies opened seconds after the last task was done, and we drove home through one of the worst t-storms I've seen in recent memory.
  • Post-race trail report from some of our guys who live local..minimal damage and a fairly light lift to fix the dmg done. It is really nice to host a race at a venue where the promoters are also the trail stewards.

The rain stopped 5 minutes before I got home. Insanity.

That kid on the bridge in the photo is on a Scalpel HT 29. Did the '23 W101 with his dad as an 11y/o.
