Start of a crack of paint defect?

In the process of some winter maintenance, and happened to notice what appeared to be a scratch. After cleaning the spot with some alcohol it now appears to be a hairline beneath the surface. Would love to think I am being paranoid, but almost positive I haven't noticed it before. Frame is a '12 horsethief with this on the lower side of the thinnest portion of the non drive side seatstay. Picture is pretty lousy, but any further insight would be appreciated. Will likely contact Halters soon just to check it out. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1418178859.657106.jpg

Cracks almost never do anything but run straight. Curves are extraordinarily uncommon, if I'm seeing the right thing. It is also unlikely that you will see a crack form in the middle of a tube without some other, obvious damage.

Still, nothing better than getting it checked out on person.

I hope it's nothing. Kind of looks like the paint below the clear coat cracked from the picture. Jdog will know. Best not ride it till you find out.... Sounds like you're thinking the same thing. Good luck.

typically cracks happen at welds at least any i had just saying, looks like clear coat fail not structure...

I'm kind of hoping for a simple paint/clearcoat issues. Only reason I really red flagged it was because of it being a flex point (pre split pivot). Wasn't sure if stress might act differently at that point. Dealing regularly with acrylic and PVC cracks regularly doesn't transfer well to how aluminum behaves, but I am fairly certain it is beneath the clear. Either that or very shallow as I can't even remotely feel it.

Thanks for the input thus far.

not sure about your bikes material but assuming steel which in turn would not split in the down tube if i am correct. steel and aluminum rarely fail in this manner
