Santa Cruz uses a ~ 1/4 thick rubberized protector. Seems to work pretty well

Ideally, and if hits are unavoidable, use a hard material that will slide off rocks, plus a dense elastomer between it and the frame.

Stumpjumper? Because there is definitely an issue with the frame protection and that area experiencing damage. There's multiple instances mentioned in the SJ or SJ Evo thread on MTBR.
