The colors on that retrotec are beautiful! I've been going around in circles figuring out what colors to go with for my upcoming McClung...

I knew the First Flight guys had resurected Mountain Goat, I hadn't seen that bike though, cool!

Of course, any custom builder will tell you, the first 20-30 frames are free! :D

i've been talking to my brother in-law about doing custom stuff. he's an airforce trained welder/machinist. he used to design and build parts for fighters so he thinks he may be able to handle doing bike frames... :D

As much as I like looking at the curvy tube custom rigs, here are a few from some smaller DJ/BMX style guys:

http://credencebikes.com/ - They might be able to do full custom although it says gyro, brake studs and cable routing on the frame page. Owner Clint is a wicked rider - has plenty of stylee flow on trails.

http://www.dobermannbikes.blogspot.com/ - They're giving a frame away on Ridemonkey.

http://nem-pro.blogspot.com/ - Nemesis Project. I've had good dealings w/ Brad but I have seen some issues from other buyers - so just a heads up. His work does look very nice

http://www.tonicfab.com/ - Landon posts on RM a lot. Sounds like a cool guy and his product looks solid. From the pics I've seen he's a hell of a rider too.

welding the frame is the easy part. it's everything else that will kill you.

yeah, that i know. hell, i can even weld! but he knows how to bend tubing, mill, and do all the other funky stuff. we've only talked about two materials: ti and steel. hopefully i can get him to do a one-off ti deal based on the jamis dragon specs for me to test. i rode a ti mooto-x based on that geometry and loved it.

Well I mean stuff like figure out the hardware, it's placement, source things like bottom bracket taps, headset pieces, dropouts.

titanium has to be welded in a vacuum, so chances are that is out of the question.

Some super sexy bikes in here. This is the real bike porn happening in here.
I am so content with what I have in the way of bikes, but I keep on looking at what is out there and there is some incredbly beautiful stuff out there...out there...way out of reach. YUM!

that's the easy part, the hard part is making the jig. Here's where you get your supplies: http://www.phred.org/~josh/build/suppliers.html

dude, that's killer! thanks!

in a vacuum you say? well then, i buy a decent oreck and call it a day. :D

i assume that he knows all of this stuff. i'm just talking out my @ss based on the 12 minute conversation we had about it.

Seven?

Or is that too mainstream to make this list? I have wet dreams about this frame. Of course it would be a 29er version, but I couldn't find of picture of one...

I'm at school right now, but I might be able to scare up a photo of a ti Seven 29er when I get home. Granted, it's not a Sola, but it's not bad...

Among the company contained in this thread, the likes of Seven, Moots, IF, etc. are pretty mainstream, IMO. Choices in this realm start coming down to aesthetics, rarity, and various intangibles that don't necessarily have any impact on the raw performance of the bike.

Waltworks was pretty strongly on my radar when I was considering a steel frame.

I kinda figured. I feel like I just admitted to liking Metallica in the metal thread. There's just something sick about a super-clean triple-butted ti frame that makes me moist in the pants. I like looking at the fwoopy weirdo steel frames, but I can't get excited about them because I can't see myself actually riding one. I've built bikes by Curt Goodrich, Vanilla, Sachs, Waterford, etc, and while they're nice and trendy and all, they don't don't go together as clean as the Sevens or Serottas or Moots and IMO they ride like the heavy oldskool outdated steel frames they try to re-invent:hmmm:

Oh, I'm with you, man, that should be pretty clear, based on what I own. When it was time to actually lay down the cash for the "dream bike", I wanted something that fit me, was impeccably built, and I couldn't possibly second-guess or grow tired of. So as much as I dig the stuff coming out of some of the super-small, left-of-center shops, buying one is another story altogether. At least until I have a lot more money to play with.

And the only problem with Metallica is admitting to liking the post-And Justice For All stuff, right?:p
