My suggestion for next year:
-Elimintate DD's. Keep the contest simple for participants as well as scorer. There is no need for DD's, if you want to win ride your bike more.
-Elimintate all bonus days/bonus points for streaks and riding in wind. To stay consistant with keeping the contest simple for participants as well as scorer. IMO this is just a bunch of crap to weasle contest points and often times is not applied fairly and objectivley. If you want to win ride your bike more.
While I sort of agree with this, this is the nature of any competition. If you KISS then it's just a matter of everyone showing their Strava/Garmin report on February 28th. It's really in the spirit of keeping things more interesting and not about winter shoes and avatars. Examples of other competitions keeping it interesting...
* the 3 point line in basketball
* the FG or 2 point conversion in football
* the turkey in bowling
* Last Chance Kitchen on Top Chef
* being saved on American Idol
* the green jersey, or polka dot jersey, in the TdF
If you ride for 30 or 60 days in a row, I think you should get a streak bonus. Nothing is more hardcore than that. If your argument is that you train, and your training plan says to rest Mon & Fri, then you're training for a specific goal and should be playing this for the fun & to encourage other people. Oleg's riding streak is awesome, and should be acknowledged in some way.
I would also be open for bonus points for, say, riding in Canada in the winter. Riding in Arizona, likewise, should net you 0.
Additional suggestion: Cap the rides at 4 hours. Why does this contest always boil down to 5-6 people? Because Joe Regular logs on, had ridden 3 days in a row, asks for his 6 points, and then Bob Superman comes and posts his 5 hour ride in a blizzard from the last DD and gets 30 points. Joe Regular quits. Can you blame him?
Jim & Ilya & you & me & Capers & Utah are all riding the winter through. What you really want is to see guys who might not ride getting out there more. And if rain & wind bonus points and DDs help make that happen, I think they should stay in some refined form.
Anyway - special shout out to Kev for a solid March performance. He's just grinding it out quietly. I'm impressed.
