Steel will be a bit more forgiving on your body, the aluminum will be a bit more responsive. I ride a front suspended aluminum and a rigid steel ss, after the same ride on both bikes I feel more beat up on the suspended bike.
That being said, my next bike will also be steel.
I think if you are going to race, the aluminum would be a better choice. If you are more of a "pleasure" rider, the steel would be the way to go.
