Shoe Covers / Waterproof Booties??

Neilism

I Owe Norm $10
1st time I'm riding through the winter and I need something to keep the metatarsals from freezing over. Not spending money on winter shoes. Leaning toward shoe covers due to the fact that I like the way my shoes fit as is and dont want the booties taking up extra space/altering the fit. Other than the fact that the booties (there has to be a better term for them) are generally cheaper do any of you have preferences that you'd care to share? Do the covers typically keep your feet dry/warm? Brand recommendations?

Bontrager makes waterproof booties that work very well for $50...I've used them for a few seasons now and think they're excellent😀

I also have booties by Nike, Pearl Izumi, and Gore and don't feel they work as well, despite costing twice as much:hmmm:

-Jim.

I get by with thin wool socks, Gore Tex socks, then med. weight wool. Neoprene shoe covers over it all for the serious cold.

Wait....when you say booties do you mean shoe covers or booties or both or neither 😕 When I say booties Im thinking over the socks / in the shoes.

How do you squeeze three layers into your shoes???

Sheer willpower. Thin wool. Gore-Tex socks are thin. I buy my shoes a half size up. I have been riding for many moons, and this is what works for me.

Thats too advanced for me.... not enough moons under the belt 😉
I'll give 2 layers a try. Thanks.

Those boots are serious....

Not quite Lakes but after dealing shoe covers the last few years I swore not another year. We did have a good snow cover for most the winter last year and I always had snow packed up underneath them....

I was wondering if over the course of a ride snow would get up in'em. Thanks.

Hello, I used those sealskins in the army and I wouldn't use them again. You'd be better off replacing the lost goretex sock if they worked for you.

Hello, Why inquiring minds would like to know. Thank you...

sorry, when I post from my phone I keep it short 🙂 They don't breath like goretex, or wool for that matter. I'd end up with cold wet feet if I did anything aerobic. In all but the very coldest conditions I just use wool of varying weights and thickness. Wool will retain heat even when wet.

Whatever system you wind up with, make sure you maintain " toe wiggle" room. I've found out over the years that blood circulation to the feet is just as critical if not more so than additional layers of insulation. I normally run 2-3 layers of very light non cotton socks and some type of over the shoe water resistant or waterproof cover.

If your feet are getting cold during the winter it may also be from your feet sweating. If that's the case, use some spray on anti-perspirant and make sure you have breathable socks.

+ 1 on that. A tight shoe = cold feet.

If you can wear an extra pair of socks + a little breathing room, your toes will be toasty.
