Recessed lighting question

I want to install screens in the recessed lights in my daughters bathroom to capture bugs that occasionally make their way from the attic above. Did this with my sons bedroom a while back by hand cutting screen to fit. However my daughter’s bathroom light cans don’t seem to be as deep so the BR40 bulbs protrude past the outer plane of the trim rings, so no purchase possible for me to install a screen. I checked the depth adjustment bracket of her lights and they are at max depth. So other than installing all new cans, I’m thinking of just getting shorter bulbs, but I can’t seem to find BR40’s in short neck configuration. PAR30’s yes, but these are a little harsh. Any ideas?

My son’s light with homemade screen installed. Note how deeply the BR40 is recessed

My daughters lights. Note the bulb flush with ceiling. Note also depth adjustment bracket is at deepest setting.

Get an LED retrofit. They have an air seal too.

Yes!

Some have a selector for color temp. Nice option. Also dimmable with a regular switch is nice.
+1 for this. So simple I did this to retrofit the two canisters in the bathroom with warm daylight LEDs. Maybe $10 each and when they break or go you you just buy another one. I expect them to last a while.

Like night and day compared to the old lights (pun intended )

So the kits I’ve found all have tension springs but my cans dont have the clips that retain the tension springs. I found a video showing how to install them but before I deal with the hassle (requires a 90 degree drill attachment, a pinch and a bunch of patience I don’t necessarily have), I’m wondering if the tension springs are strong enough to hold the fixture in the can purely on the basis of tension against the inner wall of the can. Any experience with this?

Look for interference fit

There are other solutions

I’ll keep looking but I can only see those kind of lights in 4”. I need 5/6” and every one of these seems to come with tension springs. 🤷

from the description...
  • Flexible mounting options, torsion springs or friction blades (included)
Interesting. Good find thanks. In the end though I found that my current 5/6 cans do have the tension spring tabs, they are just pressed up flush within the can wall and I have to pry them down, which is easy enough. I went with a 12 pack from Amazon for $58 (!) instead of the biz box stores that want $15-$22 per. Let’s see how they do. Hope it’s not YGWYPF.

Amico 5/6 inch 5CCT LED Recessed Lighting 12 Pack, Dimmable, IC & Damp Rated, 12.5W=100W, 950LM Can Lights with Baffle Trim, 2700K/3000K/4000K/5000K/6000K Selectable, Retrofit Installation - ETL & FCC https://a.co/d/hqaYrfs

those should be fine... you may want to replace the dimmer switch now, if you have one...

Closing the loop on this. The install was super simple. I put in an LED dimmer too. Daughter happy, wife wants them in our bathroom now...good thing I bought a 12 pack. The trickiest part was bending the clips for the tension spring. Otherwise a piece of cake. Thanks again for the tips.
