Upload a File:
IPHONE-3676.jpg

Can't get a pic to upload. If I choose an existing JPG from my phone I get an error that says "The uploaded file does not have an allowed extension"

What's the intended flow for taking a picture on the fly from the upload dialogue? Is there a max 2mb input that gets processed on the server? Or will any pic get processed to <2mb? If I try it now I get "The uploaded file is too large for the server to process".

jimmy is in a coma or something, but I think we should really address this seriously. pictures are everything.
they way it goes now is that you upload an image, it gets resized to 1024 largest side. if the resulting image is less than 2mb you are good. if over, fail.
the current image processor doesn't have compression abilities.
hopefully jimmy wakes up and installs imagemagick and sets it up as the default image handler and sets compression to 72%
We should be good to go then.
For now can you try the media tab? It's an add on we bought hoping users would use it to manage images, it's not as fluid as i'd like, would be cool if instead of uploading to the board it uploaded to the media gallery and still let you insert the images.

"if the resulting image is less than 2mb you are good"

That is not quite correct. The server is rejecting anything that's over 2MB in size before it does any processing. We're gonna need to up that to at least 5-6MB. The biggest photo I have on my phone is 5.1MB.

Not sure about the "The uploaded file does not have an allowed extension" message. Sure it's not a PNG or something?

It is not possible to install imagick PHP extension unless we go with some kind of dedicated service, but I don't think the problem is with the processing engine anyway.

Ok I got the above to work by going low res. All pics im trying to upload are jpg, 100% positive.

So, it seems I'm trying to attach and you and alter did something different....

Jimmy RTFM!

6. Why can't I upload an image, even though it is smaller than the maximum dimensions (pixels) permitted?
Server-side file size (KB) resizing is not supported. Any files which are larger than the maximum size specified in the ACP -> Options -> Attachments: Maximum Attachment File Size (KB) will be rejected.

7. Why can I upload an image, even though it is larger than the maximum file size (KB) permitted?
Uploaded files are first resized based on the maximum physical dimensions (pixels) set in the ACP -> Options -> Attachments: Maximum Attachment Image Dimensions. If the resized image is below the maximum file size (KB) limit, then it will be allowed.
Note that with XenForo 1.2 and above, by default, images of 20 megapixels and over will not be resized; this is to prevent fatal errors due to running out of memory. If the Maximum Attachment Image Dimensions combined total (width x height) is set lower than this limit, images greater than 20 megapixels, or with a dimension larger than that permitted, will be rejected with an error stating The uploaded image is too big. If the Maximum Attachment Image Dimensionscombined total (width x height) is set to 0 or greater than 20 megapixels, the image will appear as an attachment without a thumbnail. The 20 megapixels limit can be changed using a config.php switch; refer to this section of the XenForo Manual.

If the resized image is below the maximum file size (KB) limit, then it will be allowed.

Maybe that's what they are saying, but that's not how it's working. I tried to upload images of various sizes. Everything over 2MB is rejected.

I set the max to 6MB. The server resizes it down to 1024 width or height depending on the orientation. So the 5.1MB file I uploaded above is just 373kb.

PHP default is 2MB, so the setting needs to be set on both XF admin as well as php.ini.
