Panaracer Gravel King SK Plus woes

Just put new 35c gravel kings on my SS ‘cross bike.

Holy hell that was the most difficult tire to get on that I have ever dealt with.

Not much of a valley on the HED wheelset but this was off the chart difficult ( I’m using tubes fyi ). Never had much issue with these wheels and various old gravel/road tires.

Is it an issue with these tires? or is the wheelset a part of the problem. Do ‘tubeless’ compatible tires create a problem?

Would not want to flat on a cold/wet day it might be impossible to fix.

That's actually a really good thing with those tires, because they suck and will blow clean off the rim if you corner too hard or bottom them out 🤣

I find using non tubeless rims with tubeless tires more troublesome. But as others have said it's likely just the combo. Broken many Pedros on some, I suggest not using

They list two different max psi for with and without hooked rims I believe.

Any suggestion for a fast rolling 35c clincher tire that works on road and light gravel? Unwilling to go tubeless for only one bike ( that I seldom ride )

I'm running Vittoria Terreno Zeros on my all-road bike - they've been great for asphalt/dry dirt mix. They did ok on damp gravel but I didn't really push it.

The next step is Terreno Dry, which have shallow knobs in the center tread, a lot like Pathfinders.

not sure it comes in a 35, looks interesting but further proof that all gravel tires are listed as ‘tubeless’ nowadays ( makes sense )

Maybe my ancient wheelset should be the first change…

I just swapped over to Vittoria Voyager Hypers. Though they are 37s. One of the best touring tires in terms of rolling resistance. They've done well on the canal path.

This was the first tire I looked at. Seems like a possibility but this is also not just a clincher tire…

Tube or tubeless. Your choice. The bikes that come with these stock from the shop have tubes in them.

I believe the Zeros come in 32, 35, 38, 42 (I can only fit 32 on my Chapter 2 and thus my options were limited).

I also believe all the new Vittorias are "TnT" - tube & tubeless - but I get it, why fuss with the heavy bead if you're gonna use tubes.

They look like they would have been an interesting choice for my commuter…

I’ve decided that ‘tubeless compatible’ tires plus ‘tubeless ready’ wheelset is the cause of this problem.

Just switched my 2023 Roubaix to tubeless as there is no chance I have the thumb strength to break the bead if I flat on the road.

As such I’m also throwing in the towel on tubes for the SS gravel bike. Sticking with tubes on my Spooky gravel bike as I like the ease of changing to ‘optimal’ tire and I have a good sized collection of pre-tubeless clinchers for gravel….
