Opinions on CL bike

Seeing the raleighs pass through the marketplace recently has got me thinking about picking up/setting up a single speed. Kicking myself a bit for not hopping on the opportunity earlier, but oh well.

Anyway, i happened across this GT Peace 9r on CL the other day that i am thinking about converting.

Would've been nice if it was already the ss frame, but what are you gonna do. Budget is tight, but i figure if i go with it i would be selling off the derailuers and shifters to put towards the cost of a kit.

Question is, is it worth the trouble? Also, are there any issues to look out for being that this appears to have vertical dropouts? Haven't come across any while reading up on swapping before, but want to be sure before dropping a dime on anything. Guessing i might be able to get away with the original cranks, maybe with a ss ring?

One of the lesser concerns is the price point. I have already contacted the poster, but the original price i have found on bikepedia is lower than what is stated in the add. Then again, the brakes(bb5's vs tektro), hubs(formula vs deore), pedals, and i'm gonna guess the grips are all different than what is spec'd, so maybe that is making up the difference?

If anyone has any input, thanks in advance.

keep looking.

that is NOT a good deal. at all.

first, the indicated retail is WRONG.

and the single speed version of the bike retails for what this guys is selling this bike for!! if you like that bike as a single speed just go to your LBS and buy the single speed version NEW (without the cost of converting...and buying parts (gears, etc) that you dont want.

retail this bike as a SS is $550 http://www.mtbr.com/cat/bikes/29er-hardtail/gt/peace-9r/prd_415865_1548crx.aspx

you can get SO MUCH MORE bike on SL if you keep looking. essentially, with this bike you'd be paying for parts (gears, etc.) that you dont even need. and the conversion will cost more $. stay patient and wait for a much better deal.

also, are looking for a rigid fork or suspension? a steel bike with a rigid fork at $550? keep looking.

that bike as a rigid single speed should be no more than $350-400 on CL (it retails for $550)!

Agree with 'turtle. Wait for a SS. It's a PIA to sell parts sometimes especially since you don't even want them.

Thanks guys. I let myself get in over my head there early on, but had started questioning the same things over the last night/ this morning. Thought i may have been missing something on the pricing since from what i saw that didn't really line up.

Skip it. I purchased the Peace 9R SS on closeout in March '11 from Nashbar for $405 total including shipping. I believe it was 49% off.

So far I've replaced the stem, bars, brakes, seatpost, seatpost collar, tires, and grips. Had the rear wheel rebuilt too.

I have a friend who purchased a Multi frame from Nashbar within this year for the closeout price of $75. I think he's completed the build for less than $500.
