I theory you are right and from a structural standpoint, the lip on the fork is more just for alignment, rather than taking load. Obviously the axle is the main alignment point.

Facial reconstruction is the worst case scenario, probably not going to happen though.

An end cap failure wouldn't cause this this is catastrophic a failure of the axe or hub is needed.

Put all the parts in a box and bring it over when you come down to machine the endcaps. Seeing how you're putting this poor thing together is going to give me nightmares.
