I theory you are right and from a structural standpoint, the lip on the fork is more just for alignment, rather than taking load. Obviously the axle is the main alignment point.

Facial reconstruction is the worst case scenario, probably not going to happen though.

An end cap failure wouldn't cause this this is catastrophic a failure of the axe or hub is needed.

If you can wait until the weekend, I'll find out when I'm available and you can bring the fork and caps down and I'll turn them on the lathe at work. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.
