You just have to know which trails to avoid after heavy rain. And you will still get very wet and muddy, because the woods roads and rail beds are not always good.

The alternate route is a bit shorter, but it avoids the mud holes at the bottom of the camp trail near the pond, and the really bad section of rail bed after climbing Oreland. Note that it involves a mild bushwhack from Camp to the pond, and vice versa. It's kinda rideable if you know where you are going and have a fat bike. I'll rake it out eventually, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
