'Diamond Spring Brewing Company' coming to downtown Denville

DENVILLE TWP. - Renovations began last week and the Kickstarter campaign launched on Tuesday, Oct. 4, for Denville’s first downtown brewery, slated to open its doors summer 2023. The brewery, located on the centrally positioned 50 Broadway and First Avenue corner in Denville's downtown district, will be the new home of the "Diamond Spring Brewing Company." Managing partners, Craig Doremus and Attila Nagy, longtime Denville residents, will run the brewery with Doremus serving as Head Brewer.

The Diamond Spring Brewing Company name itself, according to Doremus, is a historical nod to the many businesses who came before them bearing the Diamond Spring name but was especially chosen to honor his family ties to both Diamond Spring Dairy and the Diamond Spring Delicatessen.
“My grandfather and his brother founded Diamond Spring Dairy and their other brother owned the Diamond Spring Delicatessen. We thought it would be great to continue the legacy of the Diamond Spring name for our family,” said Doremus.
While the brewery is an homage to the owners’ roots as long-time Denvillians, according to partners Doremus and Nagy, they have designed the brewery to elevate and compliment the vibrant, modern town Denville has become.
“It’s been amazing to witness the transformation our downtown has undergone since we moved in 18 years ago, said Doremus.
“And it’s even more exciting to now be a part of revitalization ourselves,” Nagy added.
Renovation on the 1960s service station building and unkempt lot where the new Brewery will reside began this month, and construction will continue into the new year, with a tentative planned opening in early summer 2023.
The brewery promises to be a space where locals and visitors alike can gather and enjoy each other’s company over a pint. Brewery plans include: a comfortable, yet sophisticated tap room venue, large outside seating with beer garden, family-friendly and pet-friendly considerations, games, music, and special events.

"We are told that the breweries beer philosophy is tradition plus trend plus fun, and to expect a little of everything on tap, as well as hard seltzers," Doremus said.
Doremus also said that there will be a strong community aspect to his business plan.
“There will be monthly opportunities for us to support local organizations and we’ll be releasing more information about our program as details unfold. We also love collaborating with local farms and vendors and have our eye on a few ingredients we plan to feature in upcoming brews.”
The breweries charitable aspirations will not wait until next year. Doremus says Diamond Spring Brewery will be donating 10 percent of any funds raised via fundraising campaigns to the Denville Beautification Committee if their project becomes fully funded.
The Diamond Spring Brewing Company will operate under a limited brewery license, which means it will adhere to New Jersey’s newly revised strict requirements under the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s “ABC Special Ruling of 2019, which among other things, prohibits the brewery from hosting any more than 25 on-site activities per year. That includes events such as trivia, live music, etc., no more than 52 private parties per year, and not attending more than 12 off premises events per year.
They are also prohibited from working with food trucks, offering a free drink to any guest, happy hour pricing, or selling food.
When asked how they feel about the recent tightening of restrictions and how that may affect their business, Doremus and Nagy said they sympathize with their fellow breweries’ frustrations with the new regulations and plan to work along with others towards reform but at the same time feel fortunate that they are opening their business with those restrictions in mind.
“The regulations have had a significant negative impact on what could be a vibrant growing industry in New Jersey. We have the second lowest breweries per capita of any state in the country because it’s so difficult to do business here, but we feel fortunate to at least be going into this venture with advanced knowledge of the regulations and the ideas necessary to ensure our success despite them," Doremus said.
The Diamond Spring Brewing company can be found at www.diamondspringbrewing.com and on social media networks @diamondspringbrewing. They have promised to keep their fans abreast of build-out progress and grand opening news on their social media accounts and via their mailing list. Although an initial "kickstarter" campaign had raised more than $9,500, the campaign was cancelled. There were 72 backers, and the goal of $12,000 was well on its way to being met.
"It is with great disappointment that we update you on a very unexpected development that we cannot continue this Kickstarter campaign. As per the new restrictions placed on breweries in the state of N.J .this past July and another earlier notice from the state, we were informed today that Kickstarter and other similar campaigns are no longer permissible for use by brewerie," Doremus posted on Oct. 3.

Cool - I was a kid in Denville in the late 60s into 70s. hit the DQ and DD with Grandma. Checking out those 3 speed schwinn choppers in the window at Denville Cycle (was it caled that back then?.) I also worked in the gas station when it was a Shell - maybe 1978? and later. Same owner as the shell station over on Greenpond and Morris ave at the time.
Knew some Doremus kids in Boonton too. Think they lived with their Grandma - can't recall names right now.
Looking forward to next summer - gotta get in shape for wildcat wednesday & post ride stop!

I’m looking forward to this as well. It’s nice to be able to go out to eat or wander in town and then to have a brewery option as well. That would be perfect!
