My Wife Rules

Our anniversary was this Sunday. I bought her the traditional anniversary gift according to whoever made those rules. On the other hand, what did she get me?

New WTB tires for my bike, lights for my bike, a new cycling jersey, and a Topeak "swiss army" type tool! :D

How many others out there have significant others who are very supportive of their riding? I guess my wife really has no choice since I support her horseback riding passion. Which is insanely demanding and grossly expensive!

That's 95% of the battle right there (getting the wife on board with your cycling habit). Enjoy all the new gear! My wife is pretty supportive overall but she does wonder why I spend so much $$ on this stuff every now and then. I don't blame her because if she was buying $100 purses, shoes, etc on a weekly basis I wouldn't understand it either. She knows how much I love it though so she's supportive.

Buy her a new horse and you're off the hook for good :D

very cool that your wife did that. My wife is supportive of my riding (3-4 days a week) and was cool when I got my 3rd bike. I think she realizes there's alot worse things I could do in my spare time.

My wife rides with me, and takes care of me when I get hurt. She's got great taste in beer. The only tough tough thing is knowing she would ride and enjoy beer without me if I wasn't able to join her.

My girlfriend recently studied abroad in Italy. I jokingly told her to bring me back a nice road bike. I figured she would bring me back some touristy crap, instead she surprised me with some nice new bib shorts. Awesome.

My wife is into horseback riding as well. She currently has two horses.

This provides four benefits, in no particular order:
-My wife stays sane riding
-My wife stays fit riding
-My wife doesn't complain when I go riding after work or on the weekend, because she frequently does the same
-My wife can't complain when I spend money on anything (bike stuff, computer/electronic stuff, video games, etc.)

It's totally worth the money.

I don't think she would have any idea on what to buy me biking-wise though. But then again, I never have any idea of anything horsey to get her.

haha, that's how it is here, exactly, 100%!

+1 on the wife rules. I just turned 40 and she wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday. I told her I'd like to go riding. We took a family vacation to to Virginia and West Virginia so I can do just that. AND..she gave me the greatest gift, of giving me the ok to get a motorcycle again after ten years. How f-n great is that! So now theres a motorcycle in the garage again!!!

I'm not married, but for those of you who have problems with MBUs, I think he best advice this thread offers is that you should buy her a horse.

Anyone with too much time on their hands would soon figure out that my "mountain biking trips" to places like Vermont, the Catskills and Long Island have coincided with certain equestrian events in the same places... ;)

My wife will buy stuff around special occasions if I clue her in. He will never just buy a certian thing because she knows everything is very specific and I am a snob. However, if she knew about the money I spent between those item she buys, she would not be so supportive.

This caught my eye. If your wife is spending only $100 on purses and shoes that's a big win in my book.

My wife just bought a $100 toothbrush. No joke. It has a wireless remote feedback pod. So I'm banking on a real set of hoops soon.

Me too

I feel I must also chime in on the Awesome wife thread. Not only does my wife fully support my riding, but she also fully supports the time I spend:
  • Doing tm all the time
A big green JORBA trailer on the side of our house
    JORBA business
    JORBA rides
Loading our basement with JORBA swag
ALL of my bikes, she bought 3 for me
and last but not least, she bought me a roadie(eventhough she is afraid for me)
She is awesome

Well she's really not spending any money these days which is good I guess but I start to look like the bad Guy because I've never really stopped. When we first met she was buying coach purses etc but thankfully she would rather buy it on the clearance and wear it "next season" (I'm sure multiple bikes makes as much sense to the casual observer) than buy it full price and have it now. I try to do the same with bike clothes but most anything else costs the same year round for us.

I used to play golf at 5-6 hours a round, start to finish. Now I mountain bike for 3-4 hours, start to finish (start to finish including the driving to / from). My wife is much more supportive now. Plus I look really good to her now.

Ding Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner.

My wife has always been supportive of me throwing a leg over the saddle. We know a lot of couples where the husband plays golf, and it really encroaches on family time, especially the weekends. Our geographic location affords me the opportunity to get rides in that meet our family schedule, even during the week. Plus, the extra weight I lost has not gone unnoticed.

Tip to all of the unmarried or recently married guys: if your partner does not ride, OVERESTIMATE THE TIME YOU WILL BE OUT OF THE HOUSE! This includes a cushion for mechanicals, post-ride chats and driving. You get no points for saying you will be home earlier, and not making it back on time. But you get extra MBUs for coming back early.
