FYI Some tree work coming up. There are two down on Blue past the double bridges.. Blue along the lake that is.
I opened up the big blowdown on blue near the single bridge. That will have to come down before winter as it is a hazard.
Red loop east of East Picnic also has a blowdown.

Sorry I am a bit late with this post but better late than never! o_O The first Mercer TM was completed Sat Mar, 16.
The objective was to begin the replacement of trail markers on the parks west side main trails.

Many of the original markers are missing, faded or compromised by tree growth.
Beginning at the West Picnic area the Red, Yellow and Orange trails were re marked into the Van Nest wildlife management area.
In case your wondering....There is still plenty of remarking to be done!

I would like to recognize and thank the folks who participated.
Mike, Chuck, Dave, Caryn, Joshua and Jacob!

Attached is an example of why they needed replacement.

First and foremost.. Big thanks to everyone that attended!
We were able to repair a bridge deck on Blue North near the Conover road ponds. It REALLY needed it!

Mike & I also recycled some parts from the old bridge to address a wet muddy section near the big pond on BN.
The line is a little goofy because we had to avoid large roots when we were setting the reclaimed bridge pieces.
We dug a small channel and had to turn the one piece 90 degrees to allow water flow but its still a lot better than it was before.
We raised the tread about 6” in between the two sections using the sand/gravel mix available next to the stream bed.
We’ll see how it holds up.

To those of you that ride Blue North you know where this is!
Not a final solution by any means but it is a start.

Saturday TM was a team of three Al, Mick & myself. One man running the hog, two clipping and clearing. We focused on the western half of the park. Yellow, Red, Orange and secondary connection trails. Western Van Nest near Quaker Bridge road still needs attention. We will get out there during the week and complete it.

Blue & Red trails near the East Picnic side are next on the schedule.

Mick & I ran the hog today on blue trail, East Picnic to the Rowing Center.. Man it was HOT!!! Hope to get out there one evening next week and complete Van Nest. Two seasons of using the brush hog are making the trail margins easier to manage. Nice and clean, no face slapper surprises. All the rain has really accelerated thorn growth.
Pics: one side done, heading back to east picnic, Mick is driving, both sides done! Back at the trailer

Sat 7/27 TM report: Big thanks to Ken & Arnov for helping out.
Here is a summary: In addition to the bigger items below we cut, picked up and dragged large limbs and branches.
Red Trail (near BMX area) still has two large trees down. We will require the full power saw crew for this work.
We removed a large branch on one to make getting over the downed tree easier. See pic in previous post)
The rest of Red is clear into Van Nest
Yellow trail is clear all the way into Van Nest where it terminates.
The trails around the BMX pit and across from West Picnic are all cleared.
NOTE: PSE&G does have the Red & Orange trails crossing the power lines closed off but you can use the two other trails to go around.

Clearing work will continue as we can.

Some Pics:
Multi tree blowdown on Yellow in Van Nest. 5-6 trees all came down together
Open! We will come back later and remove the branches over head.
A forest friend!
