The Vigilante is fairly oversized. The Trailboss is undersized. The below picture is not the greatest of the Vig but it’s the width of the casing. The threads practically measure to a 2.6.Are Vigilantes true to size? Schwalbes are usually close, Maxxis tiny. Haven't tried WTB tires for some time
Isn't there a 2.3 size? If oversized wouldn't that be closer to 2.4 real width? It’s an excellent tire, more enduro I would venture to say….not really a trail tire IMHO. The soft compound is very grippy and really too grippy on hard pack, which really slows it down. But it’s amazing on the roots and rocks. And I love the ability to lean and any angle without loss of grip (I dislike tires that have dead zones: think DHF).
However despite the weight and compound it does roll quicker than the DHF 2.5 MaxTerra I had on previously.
Hence my interest in the MM, due to it being 100 grams lighter, are slightly harder compound (in comparison to WTBs), and slightly narrower.
The Purgatory T9 is pretty dang good but I again prefer block type moto style and deeper lugged tire like the Vig/MM/Hellkat/ect. Those style tires are not the best for hard pack but for whatever reason they work best for me.
I would gladly run the Vig if it were slightly narrower and lighter.
The lugs are different on the 2.3 than the 2.5/2.6/2.8. The newer style side lugs are on the larger size. I have never ridden the 2.3 but every I read in regard made it seem the newer lug design is much better on hard pack. Whereas the older style drifter a lot. But again I have zero experience with the 2.3.Isn't there a 2.3 size? If oversized wouldn't that be closer to 2.4 real width?
the new radial version of any schwalbe tire varies from prior tires with the same tread design
Good review, what are you running out back?I did 6 miles this and I am very happy. The MM is very similar to the Vigilante.
The Vig is slightly grippier due to the softer compound. Schwable Ultra Soft may be a better competitor but I am sticking with the soft. It works perfectly good and rolls slightly faster like I was hoping.
Off camber corners goes to the Vig but (…wasn’t expecting this) the MM really pulls you into the turns faster which was nice.
The MM has a stiff sidewall (Super Ground). I still need to play with air pressure and I was worried the Super Ground wasn’t going to be enough. The Vig’s casing is a little more comfortable.
Again, overall very similar tires…but I running the MM for the season for better or worse.
Appreciate everyone’s advice! This was not meant to be an extensive review by any means…
