Looking for XC/trail Hardtail size Small

Hello all, Looking for a hardtail for my son, XC & trail worthy. Size Small needed, 27.5 wheels preferred, but would consider 29er if he could test it out. He will be riding NICA races this season, so looking for something light enough, but still trail worthy as he is trail riding on weekends this winter. Trek x-caliber or Trek Roscoe or something similar. Hoping not to break the bank, as this is his first year riding. He is currently on a used Trek 3900 XS 26er and is in major need of an upgrade. TY!

This is my post from another thread:

If you want something uncomplicated to get her started on mountain biking I have a hardtail you might be interested in. It is a "budget" build but is trail worthy and a great bike to learn on. I got a Small Gravity hardtail 29er frame without decals. I built it up with MicroShift AdventX 1x10 drive, Tektro hydraulic disk brakes, WTB 29er wheelset, Bucklos air sprung fork. I built if for my son and I've ridden it at 6-Mile and it performs well even with a 185-pound rider. $500 for it if you're interested. I was thinking of parting out the bike but I would rather sell it whole.

Thanks! Wish I knew what all of these parts meant and how to judge value, but I am not a mtb-er, so looking for something from the traditional store stock without major modifications for my son.

I hear ya. So many options can confuse some of the most seasoned riders. If you ever want to check it out or have your son take it for a spin just let me know and I'd be happy to answer any questions. It's just sitting in my garage anyway. I'm not actively trying to sell it but if I come across someone who needs something like this the I'll offer it up like now.

Solid thoughts...Our Roscoes are in stock, not modified, and on sale.

We do not have a NICA discount program in place...we have tried a number of times to get involved, and can get no response from anyone to be able to get on board. Besides, with the sale price, it would likely be about the same.
