Looking for snow? (updated with video)

A couple of pics from our rides Friday 1/18 and Saturday 1/19. Snow cover is better in MA...at least 6 inches in most spots. VT had less, but still enough to have a blast. I took some video, will post a short clip later. Supposed to get colder this coming week so if you can manage a trip up there, snow should stick around.

Video Posted

Video attached. We don't have fancy Go-Pro's or anything, so forgive the quality, but this should give you a small sampling of Pine Hill. We've been riding here for years and each year they keep adding to their collection of bridges, which I've tagged in the video. Trickier in the snow/ice, but still a blast to ride.

Note, I used You Tube's editor to remove most of the shakiness, but the trade off is that the upper parts of some footage are slightly cutoff.

Place looks hella fun, video came out fine. A little vertigo going over the suspension bridge!

Both those bikes "looked" a little more compliant than mine feels (this is all extremely subjective btw) what kind of pressures are you running?

FWIW, Mahlon had tons of snow still; and it's quite a bit closer if you need a white-stuff fix.😉

I found riding with non-fatbikers in heavy snow makes people jealous and angry. Can't we all just get along?😀

Thanks folks for the comments.

Dave, I'm running about 8 or so, and weigh about 210. Seems to be the psi sweet spot for me. Didn't realize Mahlon and points north still had snow. Probably a bit icy now, eh? Maybe it's time to break out the icebike (studs)!😀

agreed! Soooo, when are we going? 😉
A-mom: funny you should ask. I was up there to help my buddy get his 2-family home in shape. He's going to rent out the bottom 2-bedroom apartment for weekly/weekend trips catering to the outdoor crowd. His house is less than a mile from the trails, and 200 yards from downtown oldtown Rutland (shops, restaurants, theater, etc), and comes with a garage to store/clean bikes, kayaks, skis/boards, etc. I'll post up details when it's ready but answer to your question is: whenever you want 😎

I think the snow pack at Mahlon will stick around, was a really hard crunchy kinda stuff. Like man made at the slopes. I'd ride it again it a heartbeat.

8 psi...have to work my way down then. What are you using for a gauge?
Cheers!

So, you don't think it'll be icy? Wanted to do a ride at Wawayanda this Sat with a buddy, but we weren't looking to slap the studded tires on given the rocky trails there. Whaddya think?

As for gauge, I bought a low pressure gauge from Cycle Haven when I was out there for my beach ride. It helped me get a feel for what 7-10 PSI felt like, but now that I've got a feel for the pressure, I use the "pinch test" method more than the gauge itself. (as I've done with my bikes from when I first started riding).

I can't say about Waway but (IMO) Mahlon is still probably snowy enough, and possibly parts further north. Honestly we were shocked as it's only like 15 minutes from here (rockaway/denville) to Mahlon and it's almost bone dry around here.

Mahlon was slow going...maybe it did freeze/thaw cycle so it was hard enough on top to make you break it but not hard enough to skim over. Which would probably be slippery as heck anyway! But a very granular snow.

Fatbikers are going to learn Eskimo snow lingo along the way.😀

I think I was around 12-14 the first ride, dropped them down around ten and it's much better. I am trying to learn the squish method but don't trust meself.

as soon as all of us invest in fatbikes and a way to transport them lol

NO DAVE WE CANT!:getsome: but as long as fat bikers are willing to wait up i guess we can at least put on a smile 😀
