Lets talk tires

I'm currently running a set of Bontrager Jones XR in 26x2.25 fr and 26x2.10 rears.

realistically these are 2.1" and 1.9" in width as measured with digital calipers at the widest lugs.

Jersey has seen quite a bit of rain fall so teh trails are definitely wet, some sloppy mud and some thicker sludge mud.
along with rocks, roots, and regular ol dirt.

the Bontrager tread isn't even deep so i find after running through a few feet of mud/wet dirt that the tires are caked up and take a while to clean out. I don't really have issues with them in the corners as I'm not bombing down the trails at 40mph lol being cautious as I'm still a newb.

So I'm looking for opinions on what tires to go with when these wear out. I've reading tons of reviews and statements on hundreds of tires and I'm nowhere closer to a decision.

I'd like to keep price under $40-50/each if possible.

Looked at Kenda Nevegals, Excavators, and Small Block 8s.
Maxxis and Panaracers. CSTs but they seem extremely heavy compared to these others. I'd like to know what ppl in jersey are using since we're probably all riding on the same terrain types.

Thanks in advanced everyone!!

Maxxis Ignitors are an ok all around tire

I have always liked specialized tires. Some people have had problems with thin sidewalls but I persoanally never had that issue.

The Roll X are good for the rear and the Eskar tire for the front.

I running Kenda Karmas on my 29er; (2.2/1.9) I like them very much. Traction and roll is very good; they seem to spit out the mud very well too.

I think they make 2.2/2.0 for a 26er if you are running tubes, 2.1/1.95 if you are tubeless

i am running tubes. i also ride some on teh road at higher PSI. I don't mind knobbies on teh road TBH cuz i just like to ride anywhere now.

I'll look into these maxxis and kendas.

I would like something with a resistent sidewall and good tread life. I realize riding road eats knobbies but its really a 50/50 mix for me.

Way back when I rode 26ers I was a big fan of the Small Block 8s...Just as a reference, my main riding spots are Chimney Rock, 6-Mile, Hartshorne, Allaire, and Round Valley...

May have been, it was probably replaced by the captain, but I can speak for that tire and I think it has a less aggresive tread than the roll x

Anyone have experience with the Kenda Excavator?

The Excavator seems very much like a non-ramped version of the Nevegal. I've ridden the 1.9DTC version of the Nevegal and felt it was a good all-rounder. Surprisingly I thought the Small Block was better in the rocks:hmmm:

How do the small blocks work in loose stuff or hardpack?
what about thru mud?

They do clear mud. The knobs are very uh, small, so there's nothing for the mud to really get caught in. I'm not sure if there is a tire that works well in loose stuff, I feel that's more technique than anything else, unless you want to run a wide tire at low pressure, but that's not going to roll as well anywhere else. And as far as hardpack, that's what they're designed for so, they fly. I tried running them in the 29er version but they don't set up tubeless very well:(

Interesting. So what would be a good front to complement a nevegal or excavator in the rear?

Technically they're both designed to run front and rear, I've always ran matching tires. The Blue Groove is the front specific tire but I've never personally tried it so I can't offer any info...

On my SS i use an Ignitor up front and an SB8 in the back. The SB8, for having small knobs hooks up really well. I road CR a while back while it was slick and had minimal issues. Today 6 Mile was nice and tacky. SB8's were awesome.

I ride continental double fighters. Although the center is smooth I don't believe they have ever caused me to not clear something I would have with a true knobby tire. Also conti tires are known for being super high quality and light.... Evan

I have to throw props out there to Panaracer Rampage tires. I fitted them to my bike a few days before Allamuchy and these things were awesome. They cleared mud (never saw them clogged even in all that slop) and grabbed at ever little thing in the trail to give great traction. I have no idea how they ride in the dry (my usual tire are Maxxis Crossmark which are great too) but I'll find out soon since I plan on keeping them on for a few rides in the (semi) dry.

26" tires, I would use velociraptors (wtb) maybe they still make them. I also love the ignitor as an all around tire as many have mentioned.
