Lance Armstrong to Race in Leadville Trail 100

DECEMBER 01, 2006 -- AUSTIN, TX (BRAIN)--Lance Armstrong is going to race competitively on two wheels once again, but this time it’s going to be on a mountain bike.

“The other bit of a challenge I want to do is a bit crazy,” said Armstrong, during the recent grand opening of the latest signature 24 Hour Fitness Lance Armstrong Sports Club in Austin, Texas. “It’s a mountain bike race in August held in Colorado called the Leadville 100. It’s about an eight to nine hour mountain bike race, mostly on single track that very few people do and even fewer finish.”

The race involves more than 11,000 feet of climbing over the 100-mile course at altitudes between 9,500 and 12,600 feet. Armstrong’s interest in the race was sparked by his coach Chris Carmichael, who raced the Leadville 100 this year for the first time.

“I told Lance that he needed to do Leadville,” Carmichael said. “That (New York City) marathon was nothing compared to slogging it out on a mountain bike for nine plus hours at altitude and in the rain. I guess I got him to accept the challenge.”

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race, is so popular that racers enter a lottery in January to secure one of the 750 available starting line spots for the August race.

Super cool that he is going to do it, but doesnt seem like he is that well informed.

even crazier it seems that this same course is used for a super marathon. Record is 15+ hours....RUNNING!!!!!!!!

Matt Carpenter, age 41, is the course record holder. His time of 15 hours and 42 minutes in 2005 shattered the previous Leadville Trail 100 record. The publisher of Colorado Runner magazine, Derek Griffiths, said afterwards, “It was a perfect race for him. He finished in daylight for crying out loud — no one has ever done that before. I think he has just raised the bar of ultra racing to a whole new level.”

Somehow I doubt that Lance will have to enter the lottery.

I think once you win the tour de france you can do whatever race you want.

Some seem to think he's going to win this race. I'll be surprised if he doesn't place in the top 10. He's not new to MTB riding, and some people have actually called Leadville a mountain stage of the TDF but off road. Not too much technical - so they say as I've never done it (is that flame-proof enough?)

Other line of thought is that anyone who had planned to do it this year, expect a circus because that's what it's probably going to be.

It is a lottery, though it seems that once you've been accepted, and finish in under 12 hours, you pretty much a shoe in for the following year. I've made the cut 5 years in a row and actually I didn't go out in 2005, though I still got in last year. Your also right that it will be freakin' zoo. I made my hotel reservation yesterday just to cover my ass.

What's the line on Weber beating Armstrong's time at LV 2007 ?

Armstrong nixes appearance at Leadville MTB race

This report filed December 28, 2006

Lance Armstrong announced Thursday that he will not be racing the Leadville Trail 100 mountain-bike race in Colorado.

"Lance had a scheduling conflict come up and he regrettably cannot participate in the event," said Mark Higgins, the seven-time Tour de France champion's manager.

Armstrong's successor as Tour champion, Floyd Landis, also has expressed interest in racing the Leadville 100. But the event carries a NORBA sanction, which means Landis would not be able to compete should he be suspended for a positive testosterone test at the 2006 Tour, unless organizers decide to proceed without the sanction.

The course starts at over 10,000 feet of elevation and peaks at 12,600 feet. Armstrong's longtime coach, Chris Carmichael, raced the 2006 edition and finished in 9 hours, 18 minutes.
