6th Annual Hilltop Grasshopper Kid's Mountain Bike Race is coming sooner than you think. Essex County Bike Racing for kids really does exist thanks to the Essex County Parks Department.

Get the kid's on their bikes and talking about flying around the Kid's Korse in the Hilltop Reservation.
As always, the Korse is always open for training, otherwise known as riding for fun with the kids on a Korse that is made just for kids. This is the only kid's mountain bike race in Essex county, take advantage of it!

There's also an earlier kid's race with Team Bulldog on May 2 at Parker Road Preserve in Chester and great racing at Allamuchy Scout Camp on May 31, June 14 and possibly August 2, check out Jersey Rocks Junior XC Race......

To Pre-Register online, (helps us get a realistic understanding of event attendance)

o visit Bikereg.com and Hilltop Grasshopper Kids Bike Race

On August 15, onsite registration for the Grasshopper opens at 7:30 AM and competition starts at 9:00 AM for the youngest competitors, K – 1st grade. Grade level is grade in Fall 2015. There is a $10.00 registration fee per participant which includes a bicycle technical inspection. Any bike in good working order is eligible to race.

Classes for boys and girls K – 1st grade, 2nd – 3rd grade, 4th – 5th grade, 6th – 8th grade, with prizes for top 3 class finishers.

Helmets are mandatory.

Coming early to pre ride the Kid's Korse before the racing starts is strongly encouraged.

Cheering for all racers is mandatory. Bring bells, whistles, air horns, gongs, digeridoos and any instrument played by a Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Kids will have a chance to cheer for their parents during the big kid's race just before the Grade 8 race......parent's bring your bikes and be ready to line up at 1030 for a 3 lap demonstration of the results of your training regimen. No medals or gatorade shower but can promise that you can post your laps to strava and earn KOM.

Helping to get this announcement out to as many parents and kids as possible isn't mandatory but it absolutely makes a monster difference.

Volunteers are needed to help on race day, email hilltopkidsrace@gmail.com with questions or send a private message through this forum

The spectator friendly course is next to the sports field parking lot on Courter Lane and Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell.

Shameless plug for our primary shop sponsor who helps this event in so many ways, Brendan and CycleCraft......if the bike your kid rides needs to be bigger and faster, go see one of four stores and find out about parts, service and maybe even a new ride.

no idea how to add a timer countdown thing to this post but as of 14:47 on May 20 it's about 90 days until the K - 1 race starts at the hilltop grasshopper

this is totally a post to bump this thread up in the line so that all the parents / riders see it and keep this kid's race in mind and look for other kid races over the summer

keep those kid wheels rolling

happy trails

Just trimmed back sections of the Kid's Korse and made sure it's ready to ride and easy to follow. Looks like there's been some practicing going on as the trail appears well used.

Look forward to seeing all the new and returning racers on August 15.

Please advertise the race to all the parents you know, more kids on bikes means less time on Xbox

happy trails

Kid's bike race in Essex county in the woods.

The Hilltop Conservancy partners with the Essex County Parks Dept and Cycle Craft to put on the only race in the entire county to encourage lots more kids to get on those bikes and ride with the parents.

Sure it's hot out now but the sun goes down later so an evening session is perfect training. The Kid's Korse is on a western facing slope so it's actually pretty well illuminated until 730pm. (dawn patrol riders may have to reconsider and try an evening ride to get the kids out training.)

Let lots of parents know about this race just for kids, lots of kids on bikes, it's all good

happy trails

(rider parents, we'll be doing a three lap "fun ride" on race day just after the grade 5-6 finish, bring a bike and earn bragging rights)

On your mark, get set, loud siren......

For all the racers and families who have come out for past grasshopper races, you know that's the sound of an official start. Kids pedaling hard, parents cheering and cameras flashing.....good stuff.

Tell any parents with kids to get in on the fun.

We'll be final prepping the Kid's Korse on Friday, August 14, in the meantime enjoy a really fast riding course for some practice laps.
The Kid's Korse will be open until about 0845 on Saturday morning, you are welcome to start riding Saturday anytime after sunrise.

On race day, we are always appreciative of any volunteer help any one can provide for any amount of time, contact us thru this forum or ask at registration on Saturday morning.

Polish the cow bells, bust out the whistles and charge your phones so you can take some pictures or video.
Kid racing starts at 0900 or less than 21 hours from now. (adult racing at 1030)
Ideal racing conditions predicted for tomorrow morning and lots of kids already signed up for all the age groups.

We'll be ready for day of racing registrations starting at 0730

If you just discovered that your maintenance regimen overlooked the kid's bikes, get over to see Cycle Craft, our prime sponsor, and get those bikes cranking!

Looks like great weather for tomorrow. This is a great race for the kids and a nice course to get them hooked on MTB racing.

My daughter is very excited for tomorrow. It looks like a good number of kids, girls and boys, have pre-registered and many more will sign up at the race.

Great day for kid's racing.

Lots of competitors in the K - 1, 2 - 3 and 4 - 5 classes and many smiles all around.

Images from the race are available here, generously provided by GTLuke, event photographer and all around big time bike supporter.

We also have to thank all the volunteers who helped this year to make this an easy to run and safe event.

Special thanks to Cycle Craft for tech support and so much other behind the scenes support. And of course thanks to JORBA for helping to create this event and promoting it and the Essex County Parks Department for their on site support with tents etc and two really great guys to set it all up.
