I started riding on a 1981 ross adventurer that is still in mint shape, ok that's a lie i have replaced the tires a few times and just did the headset. I love the bike. But I have many miles on this bike and I feel it is time for a roadbike that doesn't weigh over 35 lbs. Right now I am looking at Raleigh, they have a new bike for this year called the Clubman. Steel frame, 2 chainring, brooks saddle, shimano tiagra.... so is this a good buy for around $1000? I think it looks pretty bad ass too.

other bikes i have considered and concerns i had

giant tcr - aluminium frame, seems like its quite racer boy style. would make me look slower than i already am.

van dessil country road bob - liked that it was nj based, and looks cool but it is a single speed. it has disc brakes so it cant be a flipflop hub.

raleigh rush hour - like the crb is a single speed but has a flipflop hub. i am looking for a bike that i can enjoy a nice sunday ride on not make myself vomit. i have my mary for that.

Anyone have other suggestions please put them out there. Right now I am looking to spend no more than $1200 and that's pushing it.

If you're not looking for new then I have a road bike that I could sell you. It has a Specialised E5 S-works frame in silver aluminium, Shimano R500 wheels, Ultegra front brakke, 105 rear brake, Dura Ace cranks, egg beater pedals, ultegra RD, 105 FD (I think), 105 shfit/break levers, Specialized carbon fork.

I would say it could probably do with new cables and new bar tape in the future but they work excellently now.

It has the usual racing rubs but runs just dandy. It weighs about 18lbs. I could let it go for about $800 if you're interested. Let me know if you want pics.

Thanks,

Daniel.

Great Scott!

Piermont Bikes has a few leftover '07 Scott S2 speedster bikes. Aluminum with carbon stays and fork, all shimano 105, MSRP is 1550 I believe and you may be able to get one for 1100-1200. I have one and it's a rocket. Give Glen a call adn tell him Justin recommended you to him: 845-365-0900

This is the '08 (the '07 is white) which seems pretty close except it lost it's carbon stays:

Its hard to beat Giant in the "Bang for the Buck" category. See Jdog at Halters.

Jdog was showing me the 900 dollar Giant Cross Bike, amazing for the money.

Slap together a FG roadie, the same laws apply as in mountain biking SS/FG'ing will make you a stronger rider :D. You could get a cheap frame from any number of places...or go for a nicer steel frame (Soma Rush is nice) a set of SS wheels will be around 250ish built up with deep v's (just don't get them in some crazy colour to be a hipster). 250+~300 for a frame+fork. headset + some cheap alu bars + stem Could run you like like 100, get a crankset +cogs for another 150 and you're golden.

I find that shopping for parts and piecing bikes together is half the fun...the other half is taking them to shops to be fixed from all your "tinkering" :hysterica

My FG roadie with a flip flop hub cost me about 780$ and it was worth every penny I love that bike. I put together a geared monster for $890 (full ultegra and even managed to squeeze in carbon drops) without too much effort after some ebay hunting.

That is a really sharp looking bike. I like that the Small blocks come in a cross tire

PSP, if you want a ss roadie, most brands carry one for only a couple hundred bucks. Spesh, Cdale and Giant all come to mind as the obvious ones.

So, you guys all know by now, it's my job to let you know what Gary Fisher has to offer in any genre you may be looking. Did you know they do road bikes now? Of course not!! No one does!! But they do!! Peep it...

$1,000 you say? Uh huh, I say.

It's "Cross-TASTIC"!! But it's not $1,000, so it prolly won't work for you:(

They even make a steel fixie and/or single-speed $700:D

You have been briefed, unless you wear boxers, then you've been boxered, of course, you could have been commando'ed:rofl:

-Jim.

PS-If you're interested, I also have a Cannondale Six13 in a 52cm (black on black) I'd sell you. Frame, fork, headset, seat, and seatpost $500. It looks like this one, but cooler.

anyone else notice several of the giant road bikes are coming with crank bros mountain bike pedals? eggbeaters and smarties. interesting.

Yeah..

On the road bikes you can use either road or mt shoes which is nice.

For road shes just run Quatro cleats.

and for Jim..

GF's first road offering looks strong.

Too bad Lemond couldn't keep his mouth shut.

I think the Big T will do better with GF anyway.

Giant road bikes are good value these days. I've always had a soft spot for Raleigh, my first two road bikes were Nottingham built Raleighs. That new Raleigh is a nice looking bike, I'd be tracking down a test-ride if I was in the market.
