I love America and Americans but the "American Dream" died...for the most part.

But it is your kids....

Anyways:
so what did you do with your stimulus check? You can't give it to some one in need, because it is a "handout". You can't keep it because it is a "handout". I assume you sent it back to the feds?
No, I am going to live life. I will give them knowledge to do the same. Sink or swim. Me setting my kids up with possesions is kinda the same as the saying “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink”. I will educate them, and try to teach them finances so they don’t need to be a slave to the system and can enjoy what they like. Loving your job really isn’t what it sounds like even when you do what you love. I have money in the bank and don’t live pay check to paycheck. That wasn’t always the case but at the same time that money in the bank doesn’t make me any happier. It’s doing the things I love that make me happy.

You’re hitting on materialistic tendencies. I’m with you here. Sometimes I think materialism is confused with the American Dream. It’s not about having more stuff. The Dream to me is being able to make a better life for yourself and your family. I’m doing better than my parents. They did better than theirs. People move here to start that process, to build the foundation. It may not happen overnight, it may not happen for a generation or two, but that to me is the Dream. the system is definitely flawed. I’m all for looking to possibly change the way things are done if it will improve the system overall, especially for the people at the bottom. Handouts don’t work, safety nets do IMHO. People will take risk with a net, but if it’s done for them, they probably won’t.
People took risks before the safety bet cane into play. We’ll say pre 2008 or even pre great depression.

Your just supporting my thoughts. Theoretically taxes shouuld help but this country is so corrupt that the taxes go elsewhere. I am not by any means a socialist or a conservative but take Germany for example they have lots of good things going for them. They have some sort of capitalism some sort of Socialism and it works, the people are taken care of. When you start a new job in Germany one month paid vacation is standard when you have a child you get one through two years paid maternity leave. All I’m saying is it doesn’t have to be as bad as it is in America with the separation between the poor and the rich. The American dream of getting married having two kids having her own house by 30 years old is it really a dream when our divorce rate is so high in foreclosure rates are so high ask yourself be honest.
That's how all "old" western Europe works. It's Social capitalism. CEO of any company doesn't make 1000 times what employee makes. Citizens have rights and benefits we will never see here.
For example in UK you have all medical benefits if you are British citizen and it doesn't matter if you work or lost your job. College degree cost is set at the same price regardless if it's private or public college. No one can fire you the same way as in USA because there is no "employment at will". My classmates from my old country (Poland) who lives around Europe and Canada are so surprised that my benefits in USA are so small compared to what they have.

The difference is USA is all about mighty dollar, nothing else matter. It's pure capitalism. In Europe is different. They take care of their citizens.

You made your choice. Why did you come to USA?

I had enough of socialism in my life and really don't want to live and work in Europe and Canada.

Because 27 years a go I didn't know any better? Look, I'm not complaining just stating the facts.
I came here with $500 in my packets and couldn't even speak English. Worked all different jobs to support myself. Finished my degree, worked corporate, bought a house, sent my son to college and etc. All I have I earned myself and in my book I'm successful. But what I don't get is why everyone ask "why did you come to USA" if say something negative about USA. I grew up in socialism where everyone was almost equal and I had to stand in line to buy bread and butter...and everything else was rationed.

I can share the similar story but my landing was much easier than yours.
Maybe I'm being paranoid but I suspect many immigrants want to see more government support. I know many successful individuals who brought their parents and put them on welfare (they could not do that as easily in Canada).

Kind of sounds like you’re the perfect example of the American dream.

who is going to send their stimulus #3 back because it's a handout? fess up ;)

OTOH I was watching 'Last Chance U - Basketball' and it reminded me of this thread. It was a good reminder that not everyone is the same. We want to be treated equal but our challenges and struggles are not the same and our minds aren't the same. To paraphrase a part in the show "some people have a very very small window and if they miss it and don't get the guidance" it's all over

What stimulus checks?

When is Warren Buffett (and other lib billionaires) going to voluntarily pay his "fair share" of taxes?

@Bike N Gear ha
My wife brought up that I should deposit their share in their savings accounts. I honestly didn't think of that before. Did so this morning.
I still own them #1 and #2 ha (ssshhhh)
