I love America and Americans but the "American Dream" died...for the most part.

Sorta on topic. My wife just got off the phone with her 93 year old aunt. Reminiscing how in the late 50's her and her husband drove out from Brooklyn to the Hamptons for the day. Saw a price of land they liked so gave the owner a $10 deposit for 1/2 and acre. Cost was about $3000 + another $30k a few years later to build the house.

Issue here is people use housing as an investment so available homes for ownership will continue to become more expensive for no good reason.

W.e. gonna buy water futures so I can still have something to drink in 10 years

Yeah so much better in 1900 when over 50% of the US population lived in poverty. Opportunity is what you make of it, it's always there.
I’m betting you didn’t grow up not going to school because you were embarrased to wear dirty clothes because your parent(s) couldn’t afford a washer and dryer.

33,000 in 1960. money doubles every 10 year at 7%
33,66,132,264,528,1056,2112

median home price in E. Hampton $1.7M - https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/East-Hampton_NY/overview
right in line with the price back then.

we all tend to look at things with linear math - how could everything become so expensive?

but it isn't linear, it is exponential. we want our 2% raise each year if we don't change anything.
we have to change, evolve, to keep up. That means risk. Job hopping is one of those risks.
expanding business, raising prices, optimizing inventory.

This is the problem with $15/hr fast food workers (or the kid you want to hire to change tubes in the front of the house.)
The person making the fries is supposed to be in a transitional position, not a permanent job.
Learning the skill of timing, anticipating, paying attention, multi-tasking.
They could go onto a management role, or take their food skills up a notch.

you'll also see other cultures are not focused on getting the kids out of the house and on their own.
multiple generations live together - they combine forces, and optimize the talent in the house.
They do better as a team. The Latinos working the golf course are probably living and commuting together.
Living simple, drink cheap beer, swim in the river, doing what they have to do. And they aren't illegals
like you all assume. yeah, the person that owns the company should be making a ton more -
they built the business, they took the risk - it may have started as cutting the neighborhood lawns in HS.

when they use their home equity loan to keep the business cash flow solvent (make payroll), they don't tell the employees.

College was a good investment for me. It isn't for everyone, but being educated to further your
vocation or profession is the way to keep pace. Taking risks is the way to get ahead.

Are you willing to bet on yourself?

👍🏻I know many people like this. They hold great parties and cook like none other

Better company doesn't offer the same security unfortunately.

Working in a toxic corporate environment where you can be punished for doing a good job is good job security? By security do you just mean that the company won't go out of business and leave you unemployed? Just because your corporate overlords will keep the ship running doesn't mean your job is secure.

I would venture to say they make between 40-60K/yr. They are doing well on this job because it's a County(govt) job, they get paid prevailing wage.

You talk as if 40K is peanuts, and for most it is given the way they spend it. However for those willing to sacrifice and get by with less to provide a better future it's a chance.

I listen to stories from my mother on how they grew up and how little they had. Her grandparents came over from Poland, it was a hard life but every generation had it better then the previous and hardships lessened.

This thread is going down the rabbit hole of capitalism vrs socialism and I don't expect to change anyone's ideology. Every system has flaws and people get left behind, we are not perfect and no system of government with economic policies can provide a utopian country.
One thing you and I never had to do was live in a one bedroom apartment with 15 other strangers because we couldn’t afford it between 1 or 2 friends. That’s how these mexicans u speak of live. Stop at the wawa in red bank at 6am. They don’t get ss benefits. Honestly, I thought I was poor because we shopped at Laneco but in reality I had it pretty good. The entire way through school we were expected to continue on to college. We had the groundwork laid out for us. Same with unions and nepatism. I hear it all day long how guys worked hard to get in the union. BS, your dad’s, uncle’s brother got you in the union.

Haha I'm old but not that old. I went to college in 1976!
This still happens in the intercity schools. I will be that guy and say it. White privledge. Why because we(anyone middle class or above) don’t care to educate the poor/lower class. We keep them that way. DARE was a great program in the 80s to reverse wage/race equality that was on an uptrend. All DARE did was get the inner city hooked on crack. Have we waged a war on drugs? Nope...

What are you talking about?!?! Spanish as in people from Spain or people that speak Spanish?

Ive promoted and seen more hispanics raise the bar for themselves than you know! Shit, to do so, i learned their language in the field and am fluent. My man Victor is building his business off the work im giving him- no bidding no comp no nothing. I saw in him that he wanted it. And i dont question his rates at all. If you think for one second that people taking tge highest risk with the most debt are just gojng to give it away, you need to revisit your economic class. So to talk in general like that is ignorant.

I see a lot of people struggling and not living a good life trying to pay for a house. It's unnecessary but so few are willing to rent a townhouse or apartment because it's not cool. Trust me, not being in debt is cool.
People have this mindset that buying a house makes them a real estate investor. Maybe if you are fortunate enough to ammortize your line but paying interest and taxes over 30 years will have you paying close 4x the value of your home.

Renting a 2-3 bedroom for a family is almost as much if not more than owning...but when you own, at least you are earning potential equity.
