I found it! (Mahlon related)

El Guac-Oh
yeah, I know....welcome to 2009 🙄

I visited Mahlon today after 7 years. I never knew there were trails on the other side of Weldon rd. 😱
Is Cascade the trail with the green diamond?? with the NICE rock gardens???
And what is the name of the yellow black dot??? Stone Gate?
I suspect there is more stuff that I didn't hit so I am going to have to go back.

There is some nice stuff there....and I used to think it was all washed out fire road and double track :hmmm:

I guess it is the same with all parks, you should find somebody that knows the park, otherwise you might be missing the good stuff.

I used my bud's 29er SS (33x20) and fcuk did I had to work hard... Although I did ride most of the stuff, at the end of 14miles my legs felt like mashed potatoes...I better get my ass in shape pronto!

It was until a few yrs ago. It still needs some more quality single track to be up there with the Mooch & RW.

What? And you didn't stop by and say "hi"?

By the time you get to the green diamond with the techie stuff, you're not on Cascade anymore. Cascade is the trail where you pass an overlook viewing the middle/high school, runs along a stream, and ends at some gravel double track (on a hill). If you cross that double track, you'll be on the green diamond. The stretch of green trail with all the gnarly rock gardens we've recently started referring to as "Anrothar's Alley".

Yes, the yellow and black is Stone Gate.

There are certainly places that will make you work on a 33/20 SS up there. Though, because of the up-and-down-short-shoot climbs that are all over that place, I think it lends itself to SS'ing...well, if you ride some of the trails the "right direction"; the first half of Stone Gate CCW on a SS is torture (for me anyways)...so I always ride it CW. Same goes for Cascade (except CCW is the more SS friendly direction, I think).

Come up for the ride on the 19th with the SS again. I'll be on my SS, certainly in worse shape than you, and be dragging 40-50lbs more up those hills than you---so it'll be a nice ride.

isnt that what Shaggz is working on ??😀

'Not sure, exactly, what the '09 plan is for MD, but I don't anticipate any "new" single track. I think the focus will be wrapping up the wall re-route and probably making some of the existing single track more sustainable (like Stone Gate).

I'd, personally, love to see a way to get from the bottom of Stone Gate/Devil's Staircase back to the North of Weldon Road trails without back tracking up Stone Gate/Devils Staircase/The Wall AND without running the rail bed.

Alas, that'd be a huge effort and would take forever, so I doubt it'd ever happen. It could be done somewhat efficiently by building a connector up the east side of Weldon Brook from the yellow (below Devil's staircase) to a section of Highlands trail. But, we can't bike on Highlands trail and the section we'd connect to would need some major clearing/maintenance; so that isn't an option.

We have some stuff i the pipeline, but that's all I can comment on at the moment. Glad you had fun El Z.

Then Anrothar's Alley kicks a$$.

I did cascade both ways.

i did stone gate clockwise

where the F is the Turtle? i did roll over some big rocks but they didnt look like a turtle to me 😛

I also thought I saw the rocks that are on the BIKE Mag Lenosky's article, but then I saw others that looked like that and then a third time...what trail is that on the Lenosky article?

Maybe I'll join the ride...i gotta see what kind of bike i will have, if any, I dont think my road bike will do good there...oh, but there is always the Stinky too :hmmm:

Dude, all your Yeti needs is a new rear derailleur. What are you waiting for?

If you're heading on the newly named Anrothar's alley in the CCW direction they are probably about a 1/2 mile in or so. Once you go through them CCW there's a long straightaway and a rock ridge in front of you. Does anyone else head to the left after those rocks? Jeff was riding through them in the CW direction in the article. I was there yesterday riding CW and cleaned it except for smacking my knuckles on the right side rock.

Then Anrothar's Alley kicks a$$.

A raffle, most likely.

Yeah you can borrow my 5-spot. It just needs a wheelset with a 20mm front hub. Otherwise it's good to go. You won't break anything right?😛

Anyway, to keep this thread somewhat on topic, I need to get up to Mahlon again soon.
