I had the honor of meeting an American hero recently. Last living medal of honor recipient from the battle of iwo jima. Read the link, know our past. I rarely post this kind of stuff, but find myself thinking of him often and thought it appropriate to share.

Woody is humble, outspoken and strong in his convictions. Dying half the man as him would be a great honor. Hell, Making it to his age alone is a feat. His energy was just amazing.

Awesome story Ken. I'll have to tell you about my Father-in-law's experience in WWII - you may have heard of the ship he was on

He is like the inspiration for BBQ from GI Joe. That guy is the real deal!

Thanks so much for posting!

I can hardly describe the presence of this man. 5' nothing and he seemed 7' tall. Described the battle and events leading up to it with humility and national pride that is largely lost today. Left the farm because "I heard the life we had was threatened, our freedom." Described his actions that day as what anyone else would have done in his shoes, and credits those who didn't come home, says the medal is for them. Hearing his story, trying to picture how it must have felt when he stepped on the beach, or what it took to volunteer (or as he put it "I said i'll try") for what he did, blew me away.

He is promoting the gold star family program to help instill a sense of national pride and respect for those we have lost and those who are here without them. Feel how you will about war, but "a nation who forgets its past is doomed to repeat it."

i've been thinking about this all day.
don't have anything to contribute other than i am moved.
thanks for putting it out there. i'll try to engage my son on this topic.
