homeowners insurance

In the market for homeowners insurance and interested if anyone has any recommendations. I would be willing to change car insurance over to obtain a dual coverage discount. Anyways, who do you use and have you ever needed to process a claim from them and how smooth was the transaction?

Coincidentally I'm doing the exact same thing now for the new place in Florida. Seems there are many small local companies down there. Up here I don't even recall what our homeowners insurance is but never had to use it. Have NJM for auto but never bothered to combine the two

I agree with @qclabrat. I've never had insurance from anyone else. Also never had to file a claim with NJM.

I do wish they would upgrade to the 21st century and allow me to do things on the World Wide Web instead of call/fax/shady email.

a quick google search has shown Amica as the cheapest in NJ based on averages by a considerable amount.

that's something im interested in as well. it has to be a simplified process.

Someone at my work is buying a house just said about Amica, which I have never head of before. Been with NJM for homeowners since 2001 and made two claims and they were good.

We have been using Amica for many years. Only had to actually use the coverage once after Sandy and they were very responsive. Handled my wind damage claim without any issues. The premiums are good and we also get a dividend check from them as well (similar to NJM). We have NJM for auto and were tempted to bundle but haven't seen any reason to move the coverage from Amica

Anything new here? Our policy renewal just came and our bill has gone up as much as the stock market has gone down.

We had Progressive before moving, and they were fine. When my bike was stolen I used them to get a new one. They actually gave me more than what the bike's MSRP was because I replaced it with a comparable bike that cost more. When we moved, however, Progressive wouldn't cover us. Sounded like it was because there was a tornado that swept through the area last year (weather was listed as a reason). So we ended up getting quotes from SelectQuote Auto and Home. Our agent was Adam Stewart and he was pretty amazing through the whole process. Got us coverage through Mercury. Same coverage as Progressive for cars and house, but at a much better price. And with a house that is worth quite a bit more than the last one.

NJM home and car so far so good. They were a lil lazy to pay one time that’s why the world has lawyers. NJM.Com setup easy; pay online; simple, don’t need to call. No brainer.

I also got the gas bill sticker shock and wanted to cry as the customer service rep told me about the rate increases that went into effect. FML

Way old post, but man oh man if I was in Florida I'd want an insurance company that was huge, diversified through the country and have big pockets.

Not a knock on you, just Florida has gotta have way more risk than a place like NJ.

And on topic, I went with Allstate on my new house, was a breeze mostly. I was in a rush so didn't shop around. Cheaper than my car insurance so it seemed like a bargain. I used ESurance previously which is a subsidiary of Allstate and never had issues with them, even with one claim.

Lots of big companies bailed our of here. We went with Tower Hill which only insures FL and is one of the highest rated local companies. Have State Farm for auto, umbrella and NJ townhouse insurance. Tried a quote from them a few years ago and it was much higher, even bundled with auto.

I might have missed it, but how did your FL make out with the storm?

Really depends where in NJ, my flood insurance is 5x my home owners insurance. It's even more insane what people are paying if the the home is not lifted above the base flood elevation. I think most people who don't have mortgages aren't even opting for flood insurance due to rates. They just did their readjusting since Sandy ten years ago and many including myself were hit with new premiums which will grow 10% for the next 5 years.

Fine. A few lanai screens (being replaced tomorrow) and three crappy trees that the township said we don't have to replace - had the stumps ground and putting sod down. Some of our neighbors with new lanai cages had them completely collapsed. Our house's lanais faced the worst of the storm - NE gusts over 120 mph.
