can anyone share or had experience with a start up club with HS.

neighbor kid came to me wanting to start mtb club at his HS. I would like to be involved and help him out but not sure about the legalistic involved.

I am hoping to start a beginner/intermediate ride for both teens and adults regularly at deer park/Stephens.

Sounds like an awesome idea! I'm sure the camp could accommodate a club in some way. Could be cool meeting spot. Already has a skills area.

I've thought about starting one at my school, but these inner city kids don't have money for bikes...

Matty - You're probably aware of this already, but starting school clubs for something that can result in injury like MTB can have all kinds of legal red tape involved. The school itself may not want to accept the potential liability, so it may not allow the school name to be affiliated. And even if they do, there may be rules (depending on the school's BOE) about whether or not a non-employee of the school can be involved. That last one is a sad and cynical rule, but once again I think it's about liability. The info Zasker posted is probably full of the kind of things you'll have to deal with. I have a few family members who work in education and they'd be the first to tell you that sometimes great ideas are very difficult to implement because the schools just can't risk litigation.

which is dumb because all high schools have gyms with weights that could easily crush a foot. the gym teachers they hire also tend to not really give a fuck about their job...

i had one just watch porn on his computer all day instead of making sure the football team benching their own weight and then some didn't crush themselves.

I think biking on trails that you know not to be dangerous shouldn't be a problem when nowadays kids are already getting tons of concussion from sports like football.

I would even argue that its safer than the majority of most sports highschools have

its all about getting them to pay for the insurance.....where it is important (meaning the parents do it) then it moves through. perhaps using the local bike club as the base vs the school?

then take them to Salt.
keep them away from the hashers.
(got a tip about this from my tour up there)

Lots of rules in public education...then throw in liability and insurance. Any costs (transportation) would have to be paid for by the students/parents too. Good luck!

Cool thinking Matty!

Seems like they've got it figured out pretty well down in Virginia. Kids can participate whether or not their school has a team.

The kids can be on a local bike shop team, or a club team, or just independent.

BTW, my 13-yo nephew is on this team and kicking butt. He won his way to the Nationals at Bear Creek the past 2 years, and he already overshadowed any biking accomplishments of his Uncle Woody by conquering the Shenandoah 100 last week!

Anyway, keep us posted on your progress and count me in to sweep some of these rides!
