Hey guys, I'm from Hillsborough, NJ and I'm just getting started in mountain biking.
I had ACL reconstruction about 4 months ago; now that I am finally starting to feel normal I am looking to get into something and mountain biking has always been something I wanted to get started in. I know mtb sounds like a hasty idea that could be dangerous for my Knee; but I'm also a competitive skier (how i tore it in the first place) and I am continually drawn to action sports.

My biggest thing right now is getting a bike that is in some condition to start riding. I have an old mass market 26"er that I got a bunch of years ago. As I've been researching bikes and part I've been wondering if it would be possible to start upgrading the bike I already have and gradually build a bike?

My other option is to buy used (as a poor college kid I don't have the funds to buy a new bike) that I could use as a started and potentially a project bike. My ideal price range for a used bike would be between 200-300.

Any one have any recommendations?

You should go the used bike route. Trying to upgrade an old 26 is throwing good money after bad. $200-$300 is tough to find anything decent, closer to $500 will get you what you need.

Is this my buddy Joey??

This is a good kid here... I hope someone has something laying around!

hey and welcome! just progress slowly and safely in your limits and you hopefully wont aggrivate the knee lol. from my searching when i started 500 would get u a basic entry lvl bike new or a better entry lvl bike used lol..perhaps save up a little more and ride what you have to get the feel for it?

good advice.

Biking is good for the knees, as long as you dont crash on it. You may want to get some soft knee pads just for extra cushioning if you do fall, but we pray you dont 🙂
As for the bike...You can pick up a good new bike for about 600 or so. I would ride the old bike for a bit just to make sure you do really want to get into it. Once you start loving it, and had time to save a little more $ then treat yourself to a new (or another used) bike. At that point you can also sell the old bike to help pay for the new one.

Welcome! I agree with many of the posts..save your money until you have enough for a new ride or at least a used ride that can handle the trails. I just started riding around here and am so glad I purchased a newer bike because the trails can get rough. You can usually find me riding six mile which is right around here (hillsborough/belle mead). The trails are great! Let me know if you want to meet up sometime. My buddy and I are always looking for people to ride with.
