all very sound advice thank you I would like to go to that JORBA fest but I'm commited into going to a chilli and rib cook off. Is there any negatives to a lefty other than it looks funny.I can get a deal on one for 1300. But I do think I'm leanining towards a Fisher or a Giant. Shops should start to have good deals on the Fishers around now

twenty niner

just my two cents but my riding buddy has broken 3 of the older fisher frames and 1 of the newest ( after only 2 weeks maybe ) he now has the steel version which has held up so far (ferrous i believe) so pick wisely. I ride a 550$ raleigh that I have had no problems with, I started rigid but changed to suspension to aleviate some of the stress when riding roots and rocks. good luck with whatever you choose.

Breaking the frame would iritate me. I'm suprise I didnt break anything yesterday at Hartshorn. I was hitting the trails there pretty hard and they got a few shots of there own on me.

You could try to build up a Niner EMD. you can get a frame for about 500 bucks and build it up. Riding a Niner gets you mad street cred with all the trail homies.

As stated, the best thing to do is test ride some bikes...

with that said, I almost bought the Fisher Cobia but decided to put the extra few bills out there to get the X-Caliber.

following my lead, my buddy just picked up a 2010 Cobia.

The new bikes have completely changed our view of biking for the better.... I'm sure whatever you end up with will be great and you'll enjoy it

Giant XTC 2 or Cannondale F2 with the raw finish. I can get them for the same price. Riding them both I probably wont notice a difference I will most likely get one in the next few days since I am going nuts with this picking a bike sitution. Thank you for any help

Here's my shameless plug for steel 29er hardtails: I ride a Karate Monkey and a Niner MCR ... (Sweet feel o steel)... I love the configurability of the KM... I regulary switch between geared and SS, and as a SS it's bomb-proof. The MCR is a bit more compliant and snappy. I rode the MCR at Sourland this afternoon over some gnarley technical terrain... and it felt springy and totally comfortable on the rocks.... not harsh.

Borrow friends' bikes and try out as many as possible... good luck

Here's my two cents...

I'm 5'-4" and ride a medium frame Cannondale F29er. She's ever so slightly big for me, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. There's just something about a Cannondale and that sexy lefty fork.

You really have to demo different bikes because when I tried a small frame Giant 29er it felt like I was riding a kiddie bike. On the same note the Haro Mary felt real nice, but I dig the look of the Cannondale so much more. We all have a different level of comfort on a frame, and preference for how we want the bike to look.

Would you buy a car without test driving all the ones you liked??

Good luck!!

I just rode for 9 days straight for a minimum of 4 hours each day. My lefty was flawless. My body was less so.

btw.. 29ers are great for slickrock! I never lost traction and I made every climb. The 26ers didn't fair quite as well.

Don't have one myself and I haven't ridden it, but based on my experiences with the Viento and Scirocco, I'm pretty sure it's the way to go, especially if you like to go fast.

Thank you for all your help. Just got home with 08 Cannondale. F29er 2 with the raw finish. Got a realy nice deal on it. Two thumbs up for The Peddler in Long Branch. I think it is the better bike and it seemed like alot of the guys at different bike shops thaught it was too. Too bad its a crappy day out. Looking forward to riding it. Plus over all it is good to buy American.:D

I ride an EMD and have received beaucoup street cred; however once I 'm seen riding the trail my cred dissipates rapidly.

Building up and EMD for $1300 is gonna be tough. I got a 2008 frame for $389 and I still ended up spending over $1700 on a budget build.

I'd pass on the XTC 2 and save your pennies for the XTC 1. The Fox shock on the XTC 1 is well worth the price difference alone and its performance upgrade relative to the XTC 2 alternative is significant. I demoed both and went with the XTC 1, I love this bike!!
