I used to go through that town all the time. Gloversville and Johnstown NY are very old towns that were part of the 'leatherneck" region. Economically they have suffered since all leather work is now done over seas. It is a pretty depressed area economically but I think the crime rate is low. Everybody I have met up there has been nice. There is a big Walmart distribution center that has helped the economy a little.
It is just south of the Adirondack state park and the county is pretty, There are no mountain bike trails in the Park, but You can ride any snowmobile trails.
For clarification, I used to stay up in a cabin in Bleeker NY on vacation, which is a little north of Johnstown. I did not actually stay in the town but I know the area. I actually would live up in the area if I could get a job. The pace is so nice compared to here,
Winters are cold, April is the mud season and June is the black fly season. July and August can get hot, but with less humidity.
Driving up and down the NY thruway can be bad due to traffic.
