I need some help planning a route for this weekend, and I was wondering, does anyone know how 9W is from Haverstraw going North to the Bear Mountain Bridge? Are there manageable shoulders along it? Is it an all out highway or two lane road? It's been several years since I've driven it and I don't remember.

I have not gone north, but I have gone south on 9W from Bear Mt. It is mostly 2 lanes on the hill. There is not much shoulder on the south descent, but when you are going 50mph that is not too much trouble, as you shorten your time in that situation. I have only ridden to Wayne Ave and climbed back up. Cedar Flats and Motts Farm are nice roads as well. That area is hilly.

Last year was hairy with that bridge under construction by haverstraw. I was up that way recently and it was fine now that the construction is completed. However I hear that in haverstraw u can stay close to the water and ride a path and avoid 9W for that stretch buti have never seen that.

I have done that from Main St in Stoney Point going south as I am not a fan of 9W because the cars go too fast. It takes you down to the river and then through town, so it is confusing to give directions. Best to check a map program. Will's ride starts down there.

They are doing road work now on 9W right before you get to the Village of Haverstraw. There are concrete barriers up so the shoulder is not very wide. It's a short section though, and you could go around it, but then you'd be riding in the Village, and the small shoulder is probably safer.

That's a nice route. I've ridden almost all of it. I'm sure you'll add to the route a quick peel-off to go to the top of Bear Mountain since you're going to the trouble of getting within a mile or so of the top. 🙂

you know, I wasn't planning on climbing bear mountain, but now that you mention it I guess I will have to... Silly to be so close and not...

As for 9W in and around Haverstraw I'll be starting from where my parents keep their boat and I more or less know the back roads to avoid town...

9W is pretty hairy pretty much the entire section of Haverstraw (not a highway really, but just a ton of local/commercial traffic, traffic lights, etc), but once you get north of the Stony Point bridge, it's pretty reasonable...even the sections where the shoulder isn't so wide, there isn't a lot of traffic.
