Gps

The new garmin's with color screens are coming out soon so these models are getting real cheap.

I went whole-hog and got a color mapping unit with barometric altimeter and flux-gate compass. It's a little heavier to carry, but is rugged and waterproof. The altimeter gives you more precise & reliable elevation data, so if you really want to know how much you've climbed it's a good thing. At $482 suggested retail, this unit is a little pricey. ('course the street price is considerably less) BTW, it is possible to generate your own contour maps at much higher resolution than the Garmin 1:100000 topo maps using freely available data.
