It might be an odd classics season as some of the top riders focus their training to peak for the Olympics...

Tadej pulled off a Babe Ruth move at Stade Bianche, but at the same time, not all of the big names were there (Sepp Kuss and.... ??). And UAE put on a masterclass example of teamwork setting him up for that attack. Still... to solo 80+ km to the finish is something else.

I agree, even wonder what impact the Olympics are going to have on TdF prep. I know it starts a week early, but the road race, TT and XC are a few weeks after and then WC right after that. And UAE is stacked this season, they have real depth and Del Toro looks like a future contender.

100% crazy effort. Hopefully Sepp doesn't crumble under the expectations after winning a grand tour. He isn't even in the same stratosphere as tadej.

Tom Pidcock was there and he won last year, but definitely understand your point.

I think he's a lot closer in a grand tour with long days in the mountains. Like, there's still a difference there but Tadej is just such a complete rider.

In an interview after the race Pidcock said he felt like he was in the grupetto when Tadej made his move.

Pidcock cant live up to expectation set by the public. He obviously has big wins, but typically when the big boys arent there.

#BasqueBloodbath.

Stage Neutralized, JV taken away on a backboard, Primoz and Remco in a ditch, and one rider hasn’t moved at all . F’ing scary. Breakaway was allowed to contest for stage win, but declined.

The wildest thing is it wasn’t even that bad of a corner.

Early season racing is kinda always a shit show…. It’s one on the things that make it entertaining. Today, it was just inattentive riding by riders who know better. Primoz and Remco look “OK” but Jonas and the other guy (they never said the name) looked bad. Real bad.

Not looking good for him to make it to the TdF. Could have been worse I guess:

Soooo, the person who wasn’t moving was Jay Vine.

UAE Team Emirates confirmed Jay Vine was one of those caught in the crash and was conscious and talking in hospital.

A subsequent update from the team's Medical Director Dr Adriano Rotunno explained the severity of Vine's injuries.

"Jay Vine suffered a heavy crash today during the race and sustained a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures," he said.
"Thankfully no neurological involvement, and there are no other major injuries or head trauma. Jay will stay in hospital for neurological observation. We await spinal orthopaedic assessment and further management. Get well soon Jay."

While I will never know what it’s like to be a pro cyclist the number of times I have seen a finish result like this still baffles me.

I guess it’s one of those caught up in the moment kind of things but this would keep replaying in my head forever.
