Anyone else going to do is? http://www.bikenewyork.org/index.html
My wife a blast last year and we're doing it again this year. It is basically a 42-mile tour of the 5 boros of NYC (Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island). You start at Battery Park in lower Manhattan and end at Staten Island. Then you get a free ferry ride back to Battery Park. Registration is $48 before March 13. Then it goes up to $58. I think kids are $25. They only allow 30,000 to register and last year it was sold out. It is a great way to see NYC from a different point of view.

This is an awesome event. 3 years ago was my first time, I started the tour at the front of over 30,000 other riders. It was more of an escorted race rather than a scenic ride through the 5 boro's. I was told by the event director/head marshall during the ride to stay behind the lead group. At one of the mandatory stops he came up to me and asked me to be one of the marshalls at next years Bike NY event. The following year I was one of the marshalls and it was a blast. With the H2H wayway race being the same day I wasn't able to do the tour last year and won't be able to go this year
For anyone who is thinking of going its a wonderful experience.

Nah -- you might want to ride your mountain bike. There are tons of potholes throughout the city. If you are in the middle of the pack, sometimes you can't see them until it is too late. The mountain bike can take them, the road bikes will flat.

Do what I did and put road tires on your bike. I wouldn't say it's a race but rather a tour.... at least for those of use who are smack in the middle of the pack.

I didn't notice much potholes, if any, last year. A road bike is not needed since you won't be going that fast. Having road tires on your mountain bike helps with reducing road resistance and have a smoother ride on paved roads.

I did it last year on my full suspension bike. It was comfy and it was not hard at all. I doubt I'd waste my time putting my road slicks on my mountain bike as I didn't bother last year.

There's absolutely no advantage to a road bike. If anything I'd prefer to do it on a hybrid with an upright seating position. The mistake we made last year was going TOO fast and not enjoying the scenery.

rode it last year and had a great time - it's a really cool way to see the city. didn't plan on doing it this year but i could probably be persuaded by a large group of people.

actually, I was just thinking of it.

I am going to ride my beach cruiser!!!!

how fun would that be...riding through the city with those big-ass handlebars.

some "hills" might be a challenge with the cruiser though. it weighs like 50 lbs and is a "ss" ;)

Try being a event marshall next time. You get free entry, t-shirt, yellow marshall's vest, baseball cap and even a free lunch! It's funny as the paying riders of the event saw us as like "bike cops"! The only drawback was having to meet up in Battery Park at 5:30 am!

You also get to cut the line for the ferry back. A few years ago it took me over three hours to arrive back at the Battery due to some screwed up ferry logistics that I never got a straight answer in regards to.

Never did that tour again.

Yep, forgot about that perk! I kinda wish the Wayway race was a different day so I could do the Bike NY ride again. For anyone wondering which bike to use, as long as it rolls it's good! Some of the bikes I saw were incredible.

That's a good idea. I might consider it next year. I just have to convince my wife of it.

Input needed from those who have done this in the past:

I have 2 bikes: A FS Giant Reign with soft and expensive tires, and a Surly Steamroller fixed gear. No effort is needed to push the fixie way faster than the Giant will ever go. I can scrape together $50 for registration but don't want to spend any money on modifying either bike for a one-shot deal. if I take the Giant, the ride will be comfier overall but I'll probably shred $120 worth of tires and it will take more effort to keep that bike in motion. If I take the fixie, I'm afraid I'll run out of steam over the course of 40+ miles, especially with bridges here and there.

Which would you take?
