Double Trouble

I was going to head to Allaire, but due to the rain last night, I decided to explore Double Trouble off exit 77. I only rode for an hour or so, mostly fire roads, but I did notice some single track.

I decided to take the powerline trail for a bit, which turned out to be pretty sweet. There were a few watercrossings that I was able to ride through, eventually I ended up at old sandpits, offering many downhills to play on and a few nice drops to hit (only considering those with a nice transition).

The pines were a nice change from watching the crashing waves at the beach, plus I didn't worry about the damage salt water can do to the bike. Going forward, this will definitely be a solid choice should the trails be wet.

The historic cranberry bogs made a nice place to stop and check out as well. When not near the site, you are pretty much it, once I was a mile or two from the entrance, the only thing I saw was water, pines, deer, and sand.....very different from the normal ride.

I am looking forward to trying to ride the powerlines from there to Forked River and back, should create a nice little ride with some problem solving when water comes up.

Right up your ally Pat!
Reminds me of the power lines on 22 heading towards flemington

Double Trouble is fun and a quick hit for us in the winter. Jakes Branch is also just down the road in the opposite direction when exiting the GSP. The 2 north to south fire roads in DT come out on Lacey Rd in Forked River. Most of the single track we have explored there empties out onto the sandy fire roads, perfect for fat tire. I think most of the single track there is fire breaks from forest fires some years ago. The downside of the main roads through the park is a lot of peds./dog walkers. Jakes is a fun little place about the size of Clayton. The blue trail is the main trail in the park. If you see the big green tandem with 2 old people on it say Hi!

Oh I know that tandem, I have run into you guys numerous times at Allaire.

I have heard a good amount about Jakes Branch recently, some have decribed it as a "mini Allaire", with similar conditions, any truth to this?

That wouldn't be my description.Jakes doesn't offer the variety of terrain nor the number of trails that are present at Allaire. I would compare it more to Clayton's size with less elevation change but still decent flow. We sometimes park at one and ride down Double Trouble Road to incorpoate both parks if we intend to do a longer ride. As I said this is mostly fall and winter as it is close to home. During summer we tend to go more to Allaire or Hartshorne for our MTB fix while keeping it local. If you go to the Jakes Branch Facebook page you can see a video that Pat and I did of the Blue trail in the park.
