I have a three ring shimano crankset on my scott voltage dirt jump bike. I waould like to pull off the first and third chain rings leaving only the middle ring and then put on an e-13 bash guard. Is this possible or will it screw up the crankset and if it's possible how should i do this?

Just lock the front derailleur into the middle. You can do this with the set screws. Should work fine.

Just a bashguard will not be enough cause your chain will come off on the inside as well. If you don't want to leave the FD on, here are your choices:

1) bash guard + n-gear jumpstop
2) bash guard + inner guard like Black Spire Blackguard
3) more expensive, but arguably elegant solutions: http://www.mrpbike.com/product.php?section=product&item=1x OR http://paulcomp.com/chainkeeper.html
4) some custom concoction you can put together with parts from the hardware store - look here: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=158959

You will also likely need shorter screws for your middle chainring, or you can use a bunch of washers and the long screws.

If you want to spend more $, you can also get a single speed specific chainring and/or single speed specific crankset, but I don't think either are necessary.
